Phillips county to the judicial convention at Oberlin in 1893 and took a prominent part in the nomination of George A. Spaulding.
He has always been a Republican. At the present time he is running the hotel at Prairie View, Kans.

John Calvin Newell was born in Lawrence county, Illinois, June 21, 1858. He came with his parents to Norton county in 1872, although but 14 years of age he at once displayed an aptitude for public affairs and early took an active part in the
county seat and other political questions. In 1878 he went to Cornell college at Mt. Vernon, Iowa, where he remained four years. He took charge of the Norton
creamery in 1883, and run it three years; he taught school east of Norton in 1885, and was principal of Norton schools in 1886; went back to Cornell college for another term in 1887; was in the commission and abstract business until 1889, when he was nominated and elected as register of deeds, was again elected in 1891, and in 1893 was elected as county surveyor.
He was married July 8, 1890, to Miss Nannie Hunter, who was born in Indiana, Sept. 14, 1867.
They have had two children, Mildred Corienne born June 12, 1891, and Ralph Nov 21, 1893.Robert Burns Curry was born in Marysville, Union county, Ohio, June 3, 1811; his father James Curry, was a colonel in the Revolutionary war, he was a representative in the Ohio legislature in 1812-16. In 1816 he was chosen presidential elector and cast his vote for James Monroe for president and Daniel D. Tompkins for vice president, was again in the legislature in 1820. From a history of Union county, Ohio, now in possession of father Curry we find that his ancestors were illustrious people and took an active part in public questions from the days of Oliver Cromwell down to the present generation as soldiers, lawyers, poets and statesmen. R. B. Curry was married to Sarah Beard February 4, 1835. She was born at Rockbridge, Virginia, May 10, 1816. Nine children were born to them, but five of them ever came to Norton county to live: James Dickey, the eldest, born February 26, 1836; Ann F. born May 25, 1843; Sarah B born April 5, 1852; Albert S. born December 11, 1854; Grace Ella born March 16, 1858. The other four James B., William G., Harriet L. and Mary M. never came to Norton county to live. In 1856 Mr. Curry moved from Ohio to Iowa where he remained two years. He settled in Nemaha county, Kansas in 1858 and from that time to 1873 he lived successively in Leavenworth, Atchison and Republic counties. He came with Kingsbury and the Biebers to Norton county in the spring of 1873 end took the land north of Kingsbury's homestead near Calvert.
