Joseph Gettys was born in Richland county, Ohio, September 16, 1834; moved with his parents to Blackford county, Indiana in 1838 moved from there to Jasper county, Iowa, in 1854; was raised on a farm and received a common schooleducation; was married in Jasper county, Iowa, Nov 13, 1856 to Miss Rebecca F. Wilson. Nine children were born to them; Mary Isabelle born July 31, 1857, married November 27, 1879 to David Stainbrook; they had two children; Earl, born August 28, 1880, and Laura A. born June 13, 1886. Stainbrook died May 7, 1893, near Newcastle, Wyoming. Amanda was born January 11, 1859; she married William Jones April 10, 1879, has three children Hugh, Lottie and Isabelle born in 1885, 1887 and 1891 respectively; they now reside in Weston county, Wyoming. Etta was born October 6, 1860; she was married to Jim Gaff May 16, 1877; she had three children, Dennis, Clara and Etta born in 1878, 1879 and 1882 respectively; she died in July 1883 and was buried in the Norton cemetery. Joseph Ellsworth was born September 4, 1862; he is now on the farm in Phillips county; Laura E. born June 25, 1866 died July 31, 1866; James Robert born August 3, 1868; was married at Hendley, Nebraska to Miss Cora Scofield; they have one child. James R. resides at University Place, Lincoln, Nebraska and is a minister in the M. E. church. Wilber W. was born August 3, 1870?? was married at Denver, October 2, 1890. to Miss Meda Snyder, they have one boy Robert Byron, born December 2, 1892; they live on a farm in Phillips county. Walter C. was born April 24, 1875; Maud born March 13, 1877; Minnie born November 12, 1880. Gettys moved to Kansas in 1870, settled in Washington county; come to Norton county in February 1873, settled on land one mile west of town now owned by G. H. Griffin. In 1871 he settled on land in Leota township now owned by John Humphrey; moved to Norton in 1877 and kept hotel in the old log house for nearly two years. He held the office of deputy sheriff for a term under Jack Conarty but never was a candidate before the people. He enlisted in company D 40 Iowa Infantry August 18, 1862; served three years; was at the seige (sic) of Vicksburg and several smaller engagements near there; also battle of Jenkings Ferry, Little Rock, Prairie Dean and Camden, all in Arkansas; was mustered out at Ft. Gibson, Indian Territory. He moved from Norton to Graham county in April 1878 and started the town of Gettysburg which took its name from him. In 1882 after his town of Gettysburg failed to get the county seat he moved back to Norton county for a short time, then went to Phillips county where he has resided ever since. He takes an active part in politics, has represented his township of Beaver in all county conventions since he resided there; was a delegate from |
