STEVENSON

William H. STEVENSON obtained a U.S. patent for original land here. He got the S half of the SW quarter and the S half of the SE quarter (a 160 acre strip of land) in section 33 of T32S, R3W (Ryan Twp., the township immediately north of Chikaskia Twp.), receipt dated 3/6/1878 in book C, page 63, and patent dated 5/6/1879 in book 8, page 275.

However, in the 1883 Edwards Historical Atlas, he is shown owning the north half of these two quarters, so I don't know if the atlas was wrong or if he had sold and bought other land. Also in the 1883 atlas in the "List of Patrons" (evidently people who had supported the publishing of the atlas) is listed in Dixon Twp. (the township just west of Ryan Twp.): W. H. Stevenson, P.O. Argonia, Sec. 17 (this would be right in town), Dealer in General Mdse., Nativity Illinois, Settlement in county 1872.

He also is listed in the Advertising Directory of the atlas under Argonia Directory: "W. H. Stevenson, Dealer in dry goods, ready made clothing, boots and shoes, hats and caps, and stationery. Glass and queensware a specialty. Highest market price paid for corn and produce. Patronage solicited."

MAGINNIS

Wellington Monitor Press, December 28, 1910:

The funeral of J. A. Maginnis, who died at the Wichita sanitarium last Wednesday evening, was held from the Baptist church at 3 o'clock on Friday afternoon, Rev. J. H. Hubbard conducting the services. The deceased had been ill for only about three weeks and had been only a few days at the sanitarium when death occurred. He was a native of Virginia, born in 1858, but moved to Kansas when quite a lad. Since 1888 he had been making his home in Kiowa and Pratt counties, engaged in the mercantile business and farming. He was postmaster at Belvidere for seven years. He is survived by his widow and three daughters, residing at 821 North Olive street.

Wellington City Directory, 1909-1910:

MAGINNIS, James E wf Mattie J r 821 N Poplar
MAGINNIS, Mable A student r 821 N Poplar

They were not listed in the 1907-1908 directory nor in the 1911-1912 directory or any of them following that date. Evidently, they were only here around the time of James' death and he was buried in Prairie Lawn. Then his wife and daughters left, but the wife and a daughter were brought back here when they died to be buried next to him. I wonder if they had gone back to Belvidere (Kiowa Co.) or somewhere else in Pratt or Kiowa Co. where they had lived before.

FOX / BROOMFIELD

Milton still exists in Eden Twp., the far northwest township in the county. The cemetery book on the Sumner Co. cemeteries that was done in 1989, shows an Elias and Rebecca FOY buried in the Eden Cemetery, but I'm sure that must have been a mis-reading of the stone, because these are the dates shown:

Elias 1796 - 25 Jul 1883
Rebecca 6 Feb 1835 - 31 Dec 1897 (on the same stone)

There are a number of FOXs buried in various other cemeteries in the county, but there's nothing to indicate if they are children or relatives of Rebecca and Elias.

Also in the Eden Cemetery are these names:

BROOMFIELD, Martha A. 17 Apr 1817 - 10 Apr 1909 Wife of Nelson Broomfield
Penina 6 Aug 1852 - 12 Jun 1886 Wife of John Broomfield
Miltona 27 Oct 1886 - 30 Dec 1890 Son of JM & CE Broomfield

LIGHTFOOT

An Andrew J. LIGHTFOOT applied for original land (he is listed in a receipt book, but not in a patent book) in T31S, R3W (Springdale Twp..), the E half of the SE quarter of section 20, recorded in receipt book C, page 368. He is not shown on that land in the 1883 Edwards Historical Atlas. However, Daniel LIGHTFOOT IS shown in the atlas as the owner of the E half and the SW quarter of the SW quarter of section 15 in Gore Twp., just SE of Mulvane.

Also, in the atlas on an "Advertising Directory" page, is listed "The Kansas Mutual Aid Association, of Mulvane, KS" and shows in its list of officers, "L. Lightfoot, Pres."

BEAMES / BEAM / BEAMS

J. W. BEAMES (the way it was spelled on the patent index) obtained original land in T30S, R1W (London Twp.), section 14, NE quarter, recorded at the Register of Deeds office at the courthouse in Wellington, KS (zip 67152) in Patent Book 1, page 97. This would indicate that he was in Sumner Co. quite early. By the time the 1883 Edwards Historical Atlas came out, a J. W. BEAMS also owned the SW quarter of section 20 in T30S, R1E (Belle Plaine Twp.) There was nothing to indicate for sure if this information pertains to James W., who was also here, or to Jesse W., or to both.

Council Hill Cemetery in Belle Plaine Twp., a mile east and two and one quarter miles south of Peck, KS (right on the border between Sumner & Sedgwick Co.s).

Meikle, Pearl Harriet 1894 - 1930

I also found John in the Land Patent Index as obtaining land in T30S, R2W (Illinois Twp.) He got the NW quarter of section 29, recorded in receipt book C, page 329 and patent book 6, page 312. This would be in the Register of Deeds office at the Sumner Co. Courthouse, Wellington, KS 67152. He's also listed in the 1883 Edwards Historical Atlas as owning the entire north half of section 29 in Illinois Twp. and there was a school shown in the northeast corner of his property, so that's probably the land he gave for it.

John is also listed in the Conway Springs Centennial book as a veteran of the Civil War from the state of Iowa.

ROLLIER / WEYTHMAN

William T. ROLLIER obtained original land in T35S, R1E (south Guelph Tp.), the SE quarter of section 15, recorded in Receipt book C, page 179 and Patent book 6, page 61 in the Register of Deeds office at the courthouse in Wellington, KS (zip 67152).

Louis WEYTHMAN also got original land in the same township in section 16. He got the NE quarter of section 16, recorded in Receipt book C, page 127 and Patent book 5, page 392, so evidently he came a little before ROLLIER.

By the time the 1883 Edwards Historical Atlas came out, ROLLIER had just the west half of his original quarter and WEYTHMAN had just the east half of his original quarter.

A. Pitts, died 13 Aug 1878, age 41 yrs, 7 mo, 15 da, wife of Joseph L.

There were three PITTS' who obtained original land in the county and this information is on record at the Register of Deeds office in the Sumner Co. Courthouse, Wellington, KS 67152. I'll list them here with the land descriptions and books they're recorded in:

PITTS, Calvin M. T33S, R2E (Val Verde Twp., between Oxford and Geuda Springs) SE quarter of Sec. 6, Receipt bk. A, page 183. This isn't listed in the Patent book, so he evidently never received his patent.

PITTS, Joseph L. T32S, R3W, W half of NW quarter & N half of SW quarter of Sec. 20, Rec't bk D, page 119, Pat. bk 8, page 401.

Mulvane, Section 9, Farmer and Stock Raiser, Nativity Pennsylvania, Settlement in County 1874. On the Gore Twp. map, he shows owning 4 quarters - the NW 1/4 and the S 1/2 of section 9 and the SW 1/4 of section 10. (The Littleton Cemetery is in the SE corner of section 9 on what was his land.) I looked in the Land Patent Index and he did not get a patent for that land, but a Warren A. Kennedy did get the patent for the SW 1/4 of section 10. That is recorded at the Register of Deeds office in the Sumner Co. Courthouse in Wellington (ZIP 67152) in Rec't Bk. B, page108 and Patent Bk. 2, page 276.

George A. LETT

s/M & S (the book has a note "hard to read")

There must have been an inscription on the tombstone. I'm assuming the "s/M&S" probably stands for "son of Moses and his wife". The only other thing noted is that Mose Lett was the owner of the plot.

PATTERSON / FRENCH

T. W. Patterson was one of the first settlers in the county according to a Sumner Co. history printed in a book published by the Caldwell Messenger newspaper in 1987. "On Sept. 10th (1870), T. W. Patterson, C.C. Shore, John Shore and others settled near the confluence of the Ninnescah and the Arkansas (rivers)." Also in the book done by the Caldwell Messenger, there is a sketch of the Henry FRENCH family. Henry married Rebecca Patterson "said to have been the first white girl born west of the Arkansas River in Sumner County."

From the Land Patents Index:

Tilman W. Patterson got land in T31S, R2E (Palestine Twp.), the SE quarter of sec. 15, recorded in Patent book 1, page 181.

John M. Miller got original land in Sec. 16 of Tp.35S, R2W (Falls Tp.), N2 of the SE4, recorded in Rec't Bk C, pg 221 and Pat Bk 6, pg 602, but in the 1883 Edwards' Historical Atlas he wasn't on that land. This is right down on the border of Oklahoma. There was a John M. listed in the atlas on the south half of sec 23 in Morris Tp., which is a few miles south of Argonia. There were some other John and J. Millers in the atlas and cemetery book, but none with other clues which would indicate they might be yours.
