Topic: WOLF
From: Posted by ?????
Date: Sunday, November 07, 1999 09:54 AM

I am continuing my attempt, since 1980, to find my great grandfather, Franz (Frank) Wolf. All I know about him was that he left his wife (Eva) and family (5 children) in the Clearwater, Kansas area in 1871, to go to work in Topeka for the railroad. During 1871 he was struck by lightning while working on a grader and was killed. That is basically all I know.
I have checked with all the counties between Wichita and Topeka that the railroad went through but have not had any success in finding him. Have been in touch with the Historical Society in Topeka regarding the Santa Fe railroad and the construction of tracks to Wichita, again without success.
Does anyone know how many cemeteries were active within the Topeka area in 1871? Were there any active newspapers that covered railroad news in 1971. Any assistance and/or direction would be appreciated in finding Franz (Frank Wolf) that was born in Johlingen Germany in 1838 and was to have died in 1871. I have all of his descendants, and his wife second marriage and her descendants but I can't find Frank.

I am looking for any information about my relatives listed in the 1909 Topeka
Plaindealer article below :

Mr. Charles Shootes (from Wichita)
Mrs. William Jackson (first name possibly Mollie)
Claudelia Jackson (graduated from Western University 1910)

================

The Topeka Plaindealer Newspaper Friday Morning, July 30, 1909 Page 1A
Popular and Wealthy Fireman! Mr. CHARLES SHOOTES, member of the Wichita fire department was the guest of his sister, Mrs. WILLIAM JACKSON, 1731 Van Buren street one day last week. He is a member of Engine House, No. 5, one of the best fire companies in the west, and are always first at the scene of a fire.
The company is made up of solid, intelligent men who know theit duty. Mr. SHOOTES
was born in Nashville, Tenn., and has resided in Wichita for a quarter of a
century, and for many years was a leader in politics, but his present position
forbids his playing the game. He stands high with the people of Wichita, and is
true as steel bo any trust that may be placed in him. He owns considerable
valuable property both real and personal, and several good houses bring him a
comfortable income. He loves his relatives and does much for them. While here
he made his sister a present of $180 and the children $25. He will present
his niece, Miss CLAUDELIA JACKSON with a thousand dollar home and lot when she
graduates next year from Western University. He is a widower whose heart cupid's
arrow has failed to pierce, but we look to hear of his surrender at most any
time.

There used to be a mission called St. Mary's in Mission township a long time ago [1870's] and its possible that an area of Shawnee county is still known by that name. It doesn't show on my map though.

There is a town and a township of St. Marys in Pottawatomie county and a town of St. Marys in Sedgwick county. According to the USGS, the one in Pottawatomie county is a little to the north and west of Topeka. That's probably the place you saw the sign for.

In connection with a thesis on female physicians in U.S. of Norwegian origin, I am hoping that someone might be able to establish the origin of one Marie L. Grote for me. She graduated from the Northwestern University Woman's Medical College of Chicago in 1894, and would at that time be at least 21 years of age. She died in Topeka (which I believe is in Shawnee county?) February 17, 1941.

I would be truly grateful for any information!

I am looking for the missing link of Maddox in My family tree. The Maddox are a Mystery Family. The Family I am looking for are located In Idaho and Oregon now. They came out of Texas and OK. to South Dakota to Kansas(in Shawnee County) then down the Oregon Trail. When they departed the Texas, Ok area they also departed the family ties, due to some kind of family Feud This was in 1860 or abouts ??
Ora L. Maddox b. 1-8-1888 in Chamberland Brule County South Dakota d. 2-4-1959 Weiser Washington County Idaho. At this time his Parentage is Unknown, but Possibility a Mary A. was his Mother ? I did fine the location of Internment for him and his wife Treasure L ( Sevey) Maddox b.-7-7-1895 d.5-8-1932 and a Mary A Maddox b.6-14-1850 d.6-21-1924 in Mann Creek Cemetery Washington County Idaho. There were children of his and Treasures marriage 3 Boys and 1 Girl, her name is Imogene Mae ( Maddox ) Murray b.8-19-1921 Weiser Washington County Idaho. The Three boys DOB are unknown to me at this time. All the boys are living and live in Oregon and Idaho. Two Are World Champion Rodeo Cowboys (PCRA) Bull Riding and Calf Roping. Imogene is my Mother-In-Law and I and my wife Pamela have been working on the Maddox Family Tree.
There stories that Imogene was told when she was a little Girl about the Family, but the family didn't talk about the passed, and not of family. Like this Mary A. Imogene told me that she can remember her as granny, but her dad Ora didn't talk about her after her death. The One thing that I have found out is that the story about Ora's Mother & Father going to a Indian Reservation in South Dakota was true. While I was checking out the South Dakota Information I found that a Comanche girl was enrolled in the Indian School at Chamberland, her Name was Harriet Maddox and she was out of Oklahoma at the time of Ora's birth.
With more checking I found a William S Maddox b.1833 he was in the Union Army Station at Farragut Post # 52 Spearfish South Dakota. His Company was Company D 9th Ind. Legion. He enlisted in Jennings County IND.. In the South Dakota State Veterans Cemetery at Falls River Hot Springs County South Dakota The Internment of William S Maddox d. 5-30-1901 .
Now to tie this to the Ora Maddox. Imogene stated that she think her Grand Father first name was William or Willie or Wills ? That her father Ora told her that her Grand father died in the Idaho State Veterans Hospital in Boise Idaho and was taken back to South Dakota.
BOY DO I NEED HELP WITH THE PARENTAGE OF ORA LOGEN MADDOX !!

Topic: Montgomery Family of Topeka 1890's-1900's
From: Posted by ?????
Date: Monday, February 22, 1999 10:38 AM

Frank or Franklin Montgomery was originally from Hays, Kansas. In 1894 he purchased a half interest in the Topeka Breeze and moved to Topeka. At the same time he became Topeka correspondent of the Kansas City Journal. After this date I can not find any reference to Franklin or to the Newspaper the Topeka Breeze.

Franklin had 3 sons, the name of one was Terrence Montgomery, born in 1880 in Hays, but moved with his family to Topeka. Terrence was Corporal in the Spanish-American War, Company A.

If you know anything about these men, or can direct me to the correct references, I would be very appreciative.
Franklin's sister Ella was my g-grandmother. Thankyou.

Looking for any information on one Joseph L. Clark born around 1850 in Madison County Indiana to Thomas and Cynthia Ann Clark. Family history has him moving to Kansas City in the late 1800's. A letter from his sister-in-law, Lavinia Clark, back to her son dated July 7, 1904 refers to Topeka and a 10 mile trip from there out to an Isack (Millicken or Millieken)'s house. Also refers to a cousin Sidney and a cousin Fanny Miller. Joseph Clark had 3 brothers; Alfred, Silas & Frank. I have a lot of information on these three and their father Thomas but can't find Joseph.
