I couldn't attend the Auction held outside Winchester Ks, May 1999, as I live in Florida. There is a REWARD for this pict. Contact e-mail for ID. or snail mail address. if you know who the auctioneer was you could contact them because they would have on record who bought it, with an old piece like that they should have a record, more that likely it was sold separately and it was for the frame probably not the picture, also if you know the farm the auction took place. I've been to enough auctions. on old antiques they usually keep records.

Charles died in 1904 and the kids scattered. Mary Catherine married a Fred Klemp and moved to Chicago with her mother. August and William (and Gustave) were dead at that time. The other three travelled supposedly to St. Louis MO.

Date: Saturday, June 03, 2000 08:18 AM

Hello
I am looking for family ties in the Shawnee County area.

My grandparents Lived in Topeka for a many number of years.

Minnie Ethel (SMITH) Siron was my grandmother.
she was married to Clarence F. Siron.

Minnie had at least one brother George Smith.
I know that she had sisters but I cannot remember their names.

Their father was Samuel M. Smith married to Lily M. (BARNARD) Smith.

In 1985 I attended a Smith Family reunion with my late mother (Vivian L. (Siron) Lowrey. and met several Smith family members that still live in the Topeka area.
However I have no idea how to get in touch with them.

I would love to know more about my family and am working on the family tree to pass down to my daughter.

Please if you have any information or may be related, please contact me.
This seems to be a very elusive line.
I do remember my mother saying that the family was somewhat prominent and did a lot of dealing with the Cavalry (the Smith family dealt with Horses and Mules)

Thank you in advance and I look forward to hearing from you.

Respectfully
Toni Jaworski

My mother was Naomi (LIMBACH) GOOD. She lived in Topeka, KS in the early 1940's. While my father was overseas, my mother became pregnant. When my father returned and she was pregnant, they decided to adopt the baby out. This was a secret for many years. My mother passed away in Oct. 1998, but before she passed away she told me of this adoption. She had a picture of the woman that adopted the boy but couldn't remember her name. The woman lived in approximately the 1100 block of Quincy St. in Topeka, KS. My mother also told me that the boy was killed in a car wreck. I don't have any information on the accident and am not even sure it is correct. I would love to find my brother whether he is still alive or not. If you have any information, please contact me. THANK YOU.

I am renovating a house in Topeka and am trying to track down history of the house. When it was first built, previous owners etc. I still haven't found a date when the house was first built, however, I am working on that. So far, I have traced it back to the 1880s. In 1887 Daniel Thompson bought it from John and Mary McMichael. It was then bought by the Whitmore family, then to the Ingersoll family, then to a Maxwell family and then to the Roether family. I am trying to track down information on these people so I can do a history on the house. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Alton... I don't know if your branch of Alton's runs into mine anywhere...still researching...
My father -
Richard Westley Alton... born in Iowa... had several brothers and sisters... I think his Father's name was Charley...
ANYway.... all of the kids in this family were farmed out when the mom died in a farm accident....so most of them have different last names...
ALSO... our 'Alton" came from New York area...but the name was actually Mosher...switched to Alton (middle and last names were changed from what I hear)...because the first "grandpa Charles Alton Mosher"....forgot to get a divorce from his first wife before he came out 'west' and married his second...
Have fun!
and please...let me know if you find anything out....

Topic: James Meacham of Topeka, KS
From: Jamie Gibbons

I am searching for more information on James Meacham. According to the 1880 census Shawnee Co. KS. His birthdate can be dated as 1832 in Pennsylvania.

Found James first on the 1850 Mercer Co. PA census as follows:

21 914 923 WEEKEM, Samuel 52 M Farmer 500 Pa.
22 914 923 WEEKEM, Elizabeth 46 F Pa.
23 914 923 WEEKEM, Sarah 20 F Pa.
24 914 923 WEEKEM, James 18 M Farmer Pa.
25 914 923 WEEKEM, Cornelius 16 M Farmer Pa.
26 914 923 WEEKEM, Samuel 13 M Pa.
27 914 923 WEEKEM, Gary 11 M Pa. S
28 914 923 WEEKEM, Hannah 8 F Pa. S
29 914 923 WEEKEM, Elizabeth 4 F Pa.

17 913 922 WEEKEM, Wm. 30 M Farmer 400 Pa.
18 913 922 WEEKEM, Olive 24 F Ohio
19 913 922 WEEKEM, Sarah 4 F Pa.
20 913 922 WEEKEM, Wm. 1 M Pa.

William his brother was living next door to them.

His father Samuel was in Kansas, as well, but do not know if they arrived together. I found James also in the 1870 Waubaunsee Co, KS (Mission Creek).

James seems to have married several times in his life, He married Mary Bratton and had my great grandmother, Rachel Rebecca Salome Meacham. Found them on the 1880 Shawnee Co. KS census along with a border by the name George Hammel. Listing him just in case he might be a relative or come into play in this familyŐs life.

According to my great-uncle He was married to a Chessman/Cheeseman as was his brother Samuel, Jr. Meacham.

According to a descendant, her notes indicate that Samuel was married to two different Cheesemans. The date he was to marry Nancy Ann Cheeseman he was married to another, ended up getting a divorce and marrying Nancy. I donŐt understand the notes/details and am still trying to get to the bottom of it all. I still have not found out the CheesemanŐs name my James was married to...just that there was a huge mixup and donŐt even know if it is the same woman as I donŐt have marriage dates, only word of mouth tradition. I donŐt know what happened to Mary Bratton Meacham whether she died or they separated and I have not found her grave or record of her death...only a picture of her and a sad one at that.

My great uncle passed on that their were at least 3 other children, but am not sure if Mary was the mother...just was told that Rachel had a brother name Gay Meacham who moved to California and was a bus driver and the twins Jay and Kay who died at an early age. Not even sure of the dates of the twins birth or death. Well, I was cruising around on the LDS website and found the following children as being through the next wife, Alice Arlona Suter:

1. Mary Gertrude MEACHUM
B. 23 Apr 1887, Topeka, Shawnee, KS
D. 12 Oct 1971, San Leandro, Alameda, CA
Mar. #1: James Jefferson Price on 16 Nov. 1905 in Hannibal, MO
Mar. #2: Silas L. Clifton on 22 Mar. 1909 in Topeka, KS
2. Lester L. MEACHUM
B. Nov 1889, Topeka, Shawnee, KS
D. ?
Mar. ?
3. William C. MEACHUM
B. Nov 1891, Topeka, Shawnee, KS
D. ?
Mar. ?
4. Hannah MEACHUM
B. May 1896, KS
5. Gay MEACHUM (Male)
B. _________ Feb 1899_______________ Kansas
D.

This must be the ŇGayÓ Meacham my Great Uncle called his Uncle Gay.
Anyway, the rest of these children would all be half brothers and sisters to my great grandmother Rachel. Rachel would have been about 5 or 6 When James married Alice Arlona. No information whether she stayed with Mary or if Mary had passed away.

She must have been a decent step mother to Rachel as Rachel gave her only daughter the Alice. Until concrete information is obtained....you cannot discount the fact that Mary might have left James and Rachel.

But I do not know if she even grew up around them. I have not been able to get through the 1890 and 1900 census to see what happened and who was in what household...may have answers there.

Now one of the things that I have discovered is, that JamesŐ second set of children are about the same age range as his daughtersŐ RachelŐs children. She married Jacob Edgar Miller and had the following:

1. James Edgar MILLER
B. 3 June 1892 in Topeka, Shawnee Co., Kansas
D. ___ September 1933
Mar.
Spouse: Myrtle SMITH
2. Alice Evaline MILLER
B. 3 October 1894 in Topeka, Shawnee Co., Kansas
D. 5 January 1970 in Dodge City, Ford Co., Kansas
Mar. 31 December 1920
Spouse: Edward John Gibbons
3. Kirk Andrew MILLER
B. 6 April 1897 in Topeka, Shawnee Co., Kansas
D.
Mar.
Spouse: Rosalyn JONES
4. Charles Arthur MILLER
B. 10 January 1900 in Topeka, Shawnee Co., Kansas
D.
Mar.
Spouse: Many spouses one was Evelyn DOYLE
5. Orville Theodore MILLER
B. 13 November 1903 in Topeka, Shawnee Co., Kansas
D. 19 March 1980 in Fredonia, Wilson Co., Kansas
Mar. 28 June 1925 in Salina, Saline Co., Kansas
Spouse: Catherine HOFFMAN

My grandmother was Alice Evaline Miller. As you can see her Grandfather JamesŐ second set of children were about the same age as she and her brothers and sisters. They all grew up in Topeka....surely they would have run into each other and surely they knew of each other? James died 11 July 1904 in Topeka, Shawnee Co., Kansas, so Grandmother (Alice Evaline Miller Gibbons) may have met him and remembered him a little as she was about 10 when he died. I have no death dates for Alice Arlona Suter Meacham and no death date for RachelŐs mother, Mary Bratton Meacham. Seems these women just disappeared? Alice would have died some time after 1899, when Gay Meacham was born.

Chronology of James (based on the little knowledge I have on him:
á Born 26 February 1832 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania
á Found on 1850 census in Mercer, Co. PA
á Found on 1870 census in Waubaunsee Co., KS
á Lived in Topeka when dau. Rachel was born on 8 December 1872
á Found on 1880 census in Shawnee Co. KS (Topeka) with his wife Mary Bratton and dau. Rachel. Note: the spelling of the 1850 census of Weekum and the spelling of the 1880 census Meekum tells me that the enumerator heard the way it was pronounced Meacham as Meekum....the 1850 may be just the handwriting of the enumerator making the MŐs look like a W.....they did have some amazing handwriting back then.
á Married Alice Arlona Suter 29 August 1883 in Topeka, KS.
á Still living in Shawnee Co. from 1887 to 1899 from childrens birth dates by Alice Arlona.
á Died 11 July 1904 in Topeka, Shawnee Co., Kansas

Would like to know more if any of you have it, esp. on Mary Bratton...
Thanks and please respond to jacwgg @aol.com and jamie@ctsco.com.

Topic: HASTINGS family search
From: PAULA HUDGINS xraysiren@hotmail.com
Date: Monday, April 10, 2000 01:32 PM

Topeka, Shawnee County, Ks.
My Great Grandpa was William Roy Hastings. He was born to a "Betty Ann" and Clarence Hastings in or about 1900. He was the youngest and was raised by an older sister after his mother died of a spider bite in 1904. His Mom was Cherokee but I need a lot more information as she apparently did not register any of her children on the rolls. I don't know her maiden name, but Clarence was from England and worked as a blacksmith. He died not long after her, being crushed by a "wagon" he was mending. My grandfather Marion C. Hastings said(in the past) he stopped in town on his way home from WWII to look up relatives, but was given cold shoulder and gave up. He now has no memory and cannot remember any details.
Please Help!! Most Respectfully,
Paula

Mary Elizabeth Ferris was one of two children born to Lindsey and Elizabeth (or Nancy) Snyder Farris, natives of KY. In 1856 they became residents of Shawnee Co KS where Lindsey kept a store in those days called 'ranches', for the accommodation of travelers, continuing in that business for a number of years until his death.
Who is the Snyder family? Is there a tie to Eli Snyder group buried in Auburn Cem. Shawnee Co KS.
Was Lindsey married prior to Snyder?
What is the Farris connection?
What happened to this family??

Hello, all. I'm looking for information on my wife's great-grandparents. All we know about them is that they had a baby girl, Mildred Churchill Hughes, in Topeka on September 30, 1894. I'd love to know how to access birth records in Topeka without going there -- I'm in Connecticut.

Any ideas or help?

Thanks,

You might check with the Vital Statistics Office in Topeka. I am not sure of the fee for this however. Also, the Kansas Historical Society is a good source of information. I am not sure of their address, but I'm sure that if you sent a request they would get it. I go there a lot. They do some research by mail, but don't know what it entails. Sorry I can't be of more help. Good Luck. If I get more info I will pass it along.

I am searching for my friend John Specht who is 81 years old and know very little about his grand parents, he think's they were born and married in Alsage/Lorraine and came to Topeka between 1890 and 1894.

His dad Joseph was the first child and was born in Topeka in 1894 other children were Barbara (1896) Mary (1898) Adam (1900) John (1902).

They left Topeka about 1903 and journeyed to Saskatchewan Canada where they settled on a farm, John only met his grand mother once and she only spoke German and he was brought up speaking english.

Any help in regard to their arrival from Europe to the USA and to Topeka would be greatly appreciated because I have nowhere to go to find any info. So please come to my rescue. Thank you in advance
