BRACK, JOHN HENRY

(Obituary) Died on 23 March 1922

"John Henry Brack

John Henry Brack was born in Schoenfeld, Russia, as the son of
John and Justina Brack. Baptized in the Lutheran church he received
the usual instruction of his church and was confirmed in Rosenthal in
1871.

In the spring of 1876 he was united in holy wedlock to Miss
Susanna Margaret Ochs. To this union twelve children were born; three
of them died in infancy, nine surviving their father. In the fall of
1876 the deceased with his wife and his parents and other family
members emigrated to America. They arrived here on our shores in the
month of October and settled near Pawnee Rock, Kansas. From here they
moved to a farm, belonging to their cousin, Mr. Peter Brack, 2 1/2
miles north and 1/2 miles west of Otis.

In 1878 the parents of our late friend took up a homestead near
Albert, and in 1879 he also took for himself a homestead three miles
north of Otis. Here the family worked for the next decade; one boy and
another and one girl after another left the home farm to build their
own homes. With the youngest son the parents lived for some years till
they decided to move to town. They bought a home in the south end of
Otis and here our late brother had to go through the last sad
struggles. His poor health forced him to seek for good ailment and he
tried many physicians, but though he got the best care by his faithful
wife and all the children who stayed with the parents over night, his
time was set and on the evening of March 23rd he passed away without
great pain. He brought his age to 66 years, 1 month and 23 days.

He leaves to mourn his death, his true wife; two brothers, Peter,
of Otis and John of Rozell; one sister, Mrs. Miller, of Sterling,
Colo.; four sons, H. H., P. P., Phillip, and Manue, all in our
vicinity; also five daughters, Mrs. Elisabeth Rodie, Mrs. Anna Ochs,
Mrs. Mary Schlegel, Mrs. Kate Brack, Mrs. Kate Elisabeth Menke and
very many near relatives and a host of friends.

The funeral was held from the Lutheran church on Sunday afternoon
at 3:30. A very large crowd filled the building to its utmost
capacity. The sermon preached on this occasion was based upon the word
in St. John (missing chapter): 19-30. The choir of the congregation
same two impressive cantatas.

Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery west of town.

May his body rest in peace and the eternal home by his
reward."

"With all my heart I thank Thee,

O Jesus, dearest Friend,

That with Thy dying anguish

Thou all my woe wouldst end.

O keep me ever faithful,

Relying on Thy grace,

That I, in Thee departing

May see Thee face to face."

This poem was cut from

 a newspaper in March 1948

and saved all these years by

Mrs. Elma Isabel (nee Dumler) Brack

who collected all these remembrances

of people living in or from Russell, Barton,

and Rush Counties, Kansas.

She has my admiration and gratitude

for this priceless gift to the genealogical

community of researchers.
