was appointed superintendent of census by President Harrison for the third
 Kansas district including twenty-nine counties, in 1890, was postmaster at Norton
during 1874 and 1875. He is now engaged in the farm loan and collection business.Mrs. Case was born in Ohio, moved with her parents to Illinois when a child and from there to Brown county, Kansas, in 1869; she came to Osborne county in June, 1872, where she taught school until she was married. 
Stella M. Case is now teaching school in this county after graduating from the Norton High school with distinction and honors.
Professor Ely has said of her that she is the most analytical student and the most philosophic mind of all the pupils
who sat under him in his wide range of experience as a teacher.John P. Dopps accompanied by his seven sons and David Close, his son-in-law, John Diefenbach and John Nelson came to Norton county. October 1, 1873. John P. was born in Ohio April 20, 1821; moved with his parents to Vermillion county, Illinois, in 1828; lived in that county for 45 years. He was married August 25, 1842, to Miss Susanna Starr who was born in Ohio March 20, 1820. Eleven children were born to them. Nine of them grew to manhood and womanhood; the eldest son, Peter, was born September 1, 1843; enlisted in 37 Illinois Infantry in September 1862, died March 1863 of measles while in the service. Eli E. their second son was born in Vermillion, county, Ill., August 3, 1845 where he lived as a farmer boy until January 27, 1864, when he entered the volunteer service and was mustered in the 149th regiment for one year as a private. After coming home he continued to farm in the same place until the fall of 1872. He was married to Lizzie A. Matthews April 2, 1871, who with him moved to Norton county, September 1873 and took a homestead on the Prairie Dog 3 1/2 miles below Norton. After proving up on the same took a pre-emption one-half mile north of Norton. To them were born |
