Harker, Tennessee, June 13, 1865. He moved from Pickaway county, Ohio, to Nodaway county, Missouri, October 3, 1866, from there to Mills county, Iowa, November 13, 1868, and to Norton county, March 17, 1879, and homesteaded in Harrison township where he lived until 1891, when he moved to Almena.
Has live at Iola, Allen county, Kansas, since August 1, 1893. Hiram S. Hiles and Lucy J. Hurst were married August 30, 1885; they have two children. He lives in Harrison township at this time. Elizabeth C. married Samuel E. Powell on January 30, 1889; they are living in Emmett township and have three children. 
William H. grew up a farmer lad, was educated in public schools and went to school at Tabor college, Iowa.
He came to Norton county with his parents in 1879 and in 1880 homesteaded a claim in Harrison, then a part of Aldine township.
He commenced teaching school when 17 years old; taught in Iowa, Missouri and Kansas.
He taught the first school ever held in Aldine township during winter of 1879-80.
He returned to Clarinda, Iowa, in the fall of 1880, taught school and read law in the office of J. R. Good.
Returned to Norton in July, 1889; he was principal of the Norton schools in 1884-85, and read law with Judge Louis K. Pratt; he was appointed postmaster in September, 1885; published the Norton Democrat and New Era, from November, 1886 until May, 1891.
He was admitted to Norton county's bar at the September term of district court 1891, and officed with Judge Pratt one year.
William E. was married to Nellie A. Shafer May 19, 1886, who died March 24, 1889.
To them were born Grover C., September 10, 1887, who died June 6, 1891, after suffering two years from the effects of swallowing a few drops of concentrated lye, and Nellie, March
14, 1889.Citney E. Shafer was born in Carbon county, Pennsylvania, March 8, 1831. She was married to John A. Shafer in 1849?. He was a soldier in the 79th Pennsylvania infantry. He died in Nebraska in 1873. The widow and family came to Norton county in December, 1879. Walter, her eldest son is a plasterer by trade, he lived here for several years; he is in Colorado at this time. J. H. Iives in Leota township. Frank H., her third son, is dead. Myra married Jim Gaff in 1885; they live in Nebraska. Nellie H. married W. H. Hiles. Allie was born August 20, 1869; she is one of our popular teachers. Gertie, the youngest daughter, married R. A. Lockard. 
James A. Gaff was born in Indiana; his father died while he was a child, his mother married Nathan Gray who came here in 1873, and took the land three miles west of Norton that was known as the Chapman farm.
Gray ran a dairy here for several years. On February 11, 1889 in a fit of despondency he committed suicide by hanging
