one died. The assessed valuation for 1879 was $157,728. The amount of tax raised was $4,721.04. A splendid crop of everything was raised that year. 
Benjamin J. Marsh, was born at Butternuts, New York, November, 30, 1862, he received a common school education.
In November 1884, he and his mother, who is now Mrs. Dr. E. M. Turner, his brother-in-law, Isaac W. Burgess, his two younger sisters, Minnie E, who has since married Charles Simpson, and Mary Alice, who married J. H. Lockard, and two younger brothers, John F. and Alfred S., came to Norton county, his older brother, Sol Marsh, having preceded them to this county.
In the fall of 1885 he took up the photograph business in partnership with Prof. Littel, and in 1887 he bought his partner out and has continued the business in Norton ever since.Ben is one of the finest musicians in Kansas and has been leader in the Norton Cornet band since 1885, succeeding his step father, Dr. Turner. He was married to Nellie R. Bennett, August 30, 1893. Samuel N. Mathews was born in Ohio January 10, 1829. He was married to Ester Brownson in 1850; five children were born to them, four of them grew to manhood. Their eldest, Lizzie, married Eli Dopps; Edgar R. was born December 20, 1854, after coming here he was married to Pearl West, five children were born to them; Florence, Gracie Maud, Zella Vivo, Eva and Guy. Zella Vivo died April 22, 1889. The other children live with their mother in Norton. Edgar R. died December 23, 1891. Thomas B. Mathews was born June 29, 1856. He married Flora Bushong August 18, 1888; they have three children living and one dead. Charles W. Mathews was born April 16, 1861. He was married to Frances Bell Graves, March 3, 1883; they have two children living and one dead. Samuel Mathews lived for some years at Richmond, Indiana, but moved to Vermillion county, Illinois, early in the 60's. His wife died there in 1864. He was married again in 1866 to Amanda Stevens; by this marriage they had two children, Stella E. and Albert F. Stella married J. G. Smith in December, 1883. He came here and ran a barber shop until 1889 when he went to Seattle, Washington territory, where he has resided ever since. They have five children, three boys and two girls. Samuel Mathews came to Norton county in 1875, and took land three miles northeast of Norton, the same farm is now owned by his second son, T. B. He was clerk of school district No. 1 for several years. He died in Norton November 9, 1885. His widow has since married Lewis Dey. Albert Kahn the senior member of The Kahn Shoe and Clothing Company, better known by some as Kahn Bros., the oldest firm today in Norton, was born in Kolbsheim, France, on January |
