CanJohurie [Canajoharie], Montgomery county, New York, and when 12 years of age his father and family moved to McHenry county, Illinois, farmed there for five years when he and family moved to Shoeffer, Wisconsin, a small town in Rock county, where he now resides.
C. F. Shimeall enlisted in company F, 13 Wisconsin volunteers, June 1, 1862; his three elder brothers being at that time in the army, he reenlisted January 1, 1864; was in the western army under Sherman, was mustered out at San Antonio, Texas, December 27, 1865, he then returned home where he met his brothers, two of whom served in the army three years and the other four years and four months.
The following March he went to Chicasaw (sic) county, Iowa and broke prairie and farmed for two years when he moved
 to Delaware county, Iowa, and in March 1871 he married Miss Salina M. Newcomb of Manchester, Iowa, and located in Hopkinton, Delaware county, Iowa, and engaged in the harness business and later in the creamery business and remained in Hopkinton until he moved to Norton, Kansas.
They were blessed with six children: two of them died in infancy, Minna, now Mrs. C. M. Poe being the eldest.
He and his family arrived at Norton December 23, 1886, hoping it would improve his wife's health but she died very suddenly March
4, 1887. The following month he engaged in the mercantile business with Mr. L. Terpening, his brother in law, as a partner: they continued in business until September 1, 1888 when Mr. Terpening moved to Almena and took charge of the stock of merchandise at that place which belonged to the firm, and the partnership was dissolved by mutual consent.
Their business was very profitable to them and I think it is conceded that C. F. Shimeall is, and has been one of the most successful merchants that ever did business in Norton. Mr. C. F. Shimeall continued in the mercantile business until May 5,1893 when he sold his groceries and dry goods and engaged in the exclusive clothing under the name of Shimeall & Son. The firm being C. F. Shimeall and his eldest son, Clark Floyd. Mr. Shimeall has always been active in politics as a republican; he was elected a member of the city council in 1890 and was elected mayor the same year to fill an unexpired term of Fred Hazelton who had resigned. He was re-elected mayor by practicably a unanimous vote the following spring of 189?. Mr. Shimeall was married November 19, 1890 to Miss Lottie A. Woodard; they have one child. A. W. Gilder was born in Fayette county, Iowa, April 22, 1859, and moved with his parents to Buchanan county in 1865 and soon after moved to Grundy county where he assisted his parents in agricultural pursuits. In the fall of 1873 he came to Mitchell county, Kansas, with O. W. Cheeseman, where he joined his parents who had moved there in the spring of that year. In the spring |
