active supporter of the prohibitory law that was enacted in the state
for the first time that winter. He was instrumental in instituting the first Masonic lodge in this city and was chosen
master. He was the first president of the Norton Agricultural Association; was in the real estate and loan business from 1885 to 1887. He and J. W. then purchased the hardware stock of E. Kostomlatsky which they run for a year, selling out to Milz and Garrity in 1889. Since that time he has been in the stock business. Mr. and Mrs. Graves raised a family of seven children; John W. was born in Bureau county Illinois, November 14, 1864; Frances B. in Mahaska county, Iowa, August 4, 1866; Willie A. in Mahaska county, Iowa on May 30, 1871; the remaining four, Maggie S., Charlie H., Frederick W. and Harvie E. were born in Norton county. His eldest son John W. was married to Laura Hatcher May 3, 1887; they reside in Norton and have three children. He is engaged in the stock business with his father. Frances Isabelle, his eldest daughter, was married to Charles Mathews in March 1882. They now reside in Norton. He is a schoolteacher by occupation. William Graves was married in November 1891 to Ollie VanBuren and has one child. They live on a farm near Norton. 
J. W. Graves was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, September 4, 1836; raised on a farm had but a limited education.
He volunteered September 1, 1861 in company D 57 Ohio volunteer infantry, served but one year
when taken sick he was discharged. In the latter part of 1863 he helped to organize a militia, company which was called out May, 1864;
was out with them 120 days, and was again discharged. He was in no engagements in either of his enlistments though with his company
continuously. He was married to Mary A. Hastings September 1869. Had the misfortune to lose his wife by
accident, she being burned to death in December, 1871. Was again married September, 1873
to Mary Buchanan, She was born in Holmes county, Ohio, April 14, 1845. They moved to Waubunsee
(sic) county, Kansas in March 1878, and September of
same year moved to Norton county and homesteaded the farm on which they still live.
By his first marriage there was one child William W. Graves,  born July 9, 1870; he attended the Norton school and taught his
first term the spring after he was 18, taught two winter terms in Noble township of this county.
In 1893 he purchased the jewelry stock of Mac Reeves and went into partnership with Hobert Kelley in that business.
They afterward divided the stock; he is now running part of it in Oberlin, Kansas.
By his second marriage J. W. Graves has six children, the eldest, Clifford Stanley, born August 16, 1874; Edna Lee born
January 2, 1876; Robert Burchard born
