Query: I looking for the information on Ada Forsyth in Family Histories and Stories of Miami County, Kansas [Vol I] , pg 184. I am not sure if this is the Ada that I am looking for. The one that I am interested in was in Bates Co., MO until 1881 and then the family disappeared and I am looking everywhere for them

Response:I noticed your query on Forsythe. I have been involved in the genealogy of this line of Hickmans for some time. They spent most of their lives in Bates Co., MO and Miami CO., KA My information starts with Gideon Blake Hickman (born 10 May 1829, Absecom, Gloucester Co.,New Jersey), who married Catherine Amanda Cain in 1853. Their first child, Aza was born in Lima, Adams Co., Ill. on 8 Aug. 1854. The other three children were also born there (Everett, Irwin and Katie). Aza married John D. Durrett and lived in Bates Co. and Jackson Co., MO the rest of her life. Everett married Ada Forsythe on 26 Dec. 1879 and lived most of his life in Bates Co., MO and Miami Co., KA. Irwin married Lydia ? and lived in Miami Co., KA most of his life (he was an undertaker there).

Gideon was a postmaster in 1861 in Lima, Ill (as well as a farmer for almost 15 years in Lima), census taker in Bates Co., MO in 1880, and a farmer and undertaker in Bates Co., MO and Miami Co., KA. I have records for Gideon, Aza, Everett and Irwin in all the federal census from 1860-1920.

Gideon died in 1915, Catherine in 1922, Everett in 1948, Ada in 1927 and they are buried in Miami Co. or Bates Co. Gideon is my 3rd great-grandfather, Everett my second, his son Daniel is my great-grandfather and his son Harry, is my grandfather. All but Harry spent most of their lives in KA or MO. Harry moved to Nebr. in the 1920's and lived the rest of his life there.I can supply you with a lot of background information on these families.

I am trying to locate the names of Gideon's parents. They were from New Jersey (possibly born there). None of the documents I have seen give their names. They may have come to Illinois with Gideon but I have checked the marriage records (for 1850's) in Illinois for Gideon and Catherine and they were not listed. They may have been married in PA (where Catherine was born) or New Jersey. Without the names of Gideon's parents, I can not trace my Hickman line back any farther than 1829 in New Jersey. There are numerous Hickman's living in New Jersey in the 1820's. There are also numerous Hickman's in Illinois during the 1850's but I am not sure if any are realted to Gideon. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated.
