Query Surnames: Vanderhoof

Date: 17 Feb 97

Query: I need the address for Paola KS library or someone who will search for a birth record of George Vanderhoof, my grandfather. Dennis and Lucy Vanderhoof moved to a farm in Stanton Township, near Paola, Miami County, KS around 1870-80, from Ohio. Both are buried there. He died Jan. 1906. She died in 1923. They had five children: Vernon, Mary, Luther and Lucy Daisy (twins), George Elba. All born in Stanton, Miami County, KS.

Mary Vanderhoof married a Charles Hay...Does the Hay family have the family bible? Lucy Daisy and Luther were twins. Lucy Daisy married a William Williams in 1887 and died in childbirth Dec. 1889. The Ford family of that area is kin to Lucy Vanderhoof, the mother. Which Ford brother moved to KS with his sister?

Julia Maloney maloney@atlcom.net

Response: I checked the two volumes of cemetery records but found no reference to the name Maloney. In Family Histories and Stories of Miami County, Kansas, p. 262, there was a reference to Robert McGrath and Alice Maloney of Limerick, Ireland, left Ireland on the sailing vessel Anne Boleyn in 1849 and came to Miami Co. in 1866. Her husband died in 1870 and she raised her nine children on the farm 1 mile east of Paola. Given the few Maloney references for Miami Co., it may be that she is related to the person you are seeking information about.

Query Surnames: Van Horn

Date: 16 Jan 97

Query: My family is Van Horn. They definitely lived in Ossawatomie in 1896, the year my grandmother, Pearl Margaret was born. John Calvin VanHorn was married to Mary Frances Canfield. They were supposed to have migrated to Oklahoma about the turn of the century. John Calvin and Mary Frances had these children: Verna b. abt. 1883, Myrtle b. abt. 1892, Johnny b. abt. 1893 and died soon thereafter, Marcus Tenny b. about 1895, Pearl Margaret, b. 1896 (or maybe 1898.....there seems to be a question there), and another John b. 1901 and died when he was 16 (but he must have been born either in OK or TX). My Ggmother, Mary Frances Canfield-VanHorn supposedly went back to the Kansas City, KS/Paola/Ossawatomie area where she died. There was some talk about her being linked to a man by the last name of "Husley", but we're not sure if she married him later in life or if he was just a suitor. She and John Calvin divorced in the early 1900s. If you have any information on this line, or on the line of John Montgomery Canfield in the same area, please let me know.

Susan Strain BStrain659@aol.com

Response:The only reference I found to Van Horn was in Cemeteries of Miami Co., KS, Vol. I, p. 102, Indianapolis Cemetery located in Osawatomie Twp. In row 6, grave 1, Van Horn, John (broken stone). no further information was available. There were references to Husley but several to Hussey but none appeared to relate to what you were seeking. In Cemeteries of Miami Co., Vol. II, p. 129, Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Row 6, Grave 46, Canfield, J. M. father 1864-1947; Canfield, Fannie, wife, mother 1860-1920. In Family Histories and Stories, p. 326, notation that Harry Fay Russell's first wife was Georgia Mae Canfield.
