Query Surnames: Geers, Reid (Reed)

Date: 16 Dec 1996

Query: My great-great-grandfather Jesse James GEERS owned property and lived in Miami County and most probably Wade Township from 1880 or so until right after the turn of the century, sometime after 1901. His daughter Orpha Cecilia GEERS was married to John Edward REED at Hillsdale on 11 Feb 1892 at the Baptist Church by an Elder Jacob BROWN. Orpha died of pneumonia on 21 Apr 1901, believe she is buried in the Wellsville Cemetary. I also don't find any association to John BROWN in his genealogical record. Does anyone know of Jacob BROWN?

I have noticed that the name of John W. Reid is spelled as REED and REID in the accounts of the battle of Osawatomie. Does anyone know which is the correct spelling of the surname REID or where I might look for the genealogy of his family? I would like to contact anyone who might have any information about any of these folks as I know little about them from here on back in the family history.

Query Surnames: Wheat

Date: 29 Nov 1996

Query: Would you check your cemetary listing for Miami Co. Rockville, and also Paola Cemetary. I am trying to locate a Mary Wheat died abt. 1884. She was the mother of Jacob and died when he was 8 and since he was born 1876, this should be right. His father William Cameron. I have the listing of William Cameron and Mary Hightower.

Jacob told everybody and everybody in our family knew that William Cameron was his father, and his uncle. William or uncle Billy as he was known signed the farm over to family members and Jacob got one 8th of it, but later he evidentally owned it because he rented it to my grandmother and grandfather Rhea, and that is the place where my mom first lived. Her grave is supposed to be inside the gate, and without a stone. Jacob never got around to it.

Pat Hall, p_lh@earthlink.net

Response:The only cemetery references to Wheat were found only in Cemeteries of Miami County, Kansas, Volume I, p. 187. In the Rockville Cemetery, Block III, Lot 4, owned by Jacob Wheat are the following: Wheat, Jacob 1877-1963 father; Wheat, Evangeline 1876-1957 mother; Wheat, Harvey Glenn 1900-1919. In Lot 3, owned by J. L. Rhea, are the following: Rhea, John L. 9 Dec 1845 - 1 Aug 1909; Rhea, Margaret 20 Sep 1858 - 16 Mar 1933; Rhea, Lyman E., son of J.L. and M.C., died 23 Jan 1883; Rhea, Nora [no dates]; and Shoemaker, Julia 1869-1903.

I went through all the entries for Rockville Cemetery (first known as Wm. Cameron Cemetery) and could find no reference to Mary Wheat. Since the Cameron lot is lot #1, it is possible she is buried in the lot with Wm. Cameron and Mary Hightower in an unmarked grave. There is also about a column and one photo in Family Histories and Stories of Miami County, Kansas, related to John J. Rhea the son of John L. Rhea, in case you need it.

Query Surnames: Stevens, Weiland

Date: 29 Nov 1996

Query: My gg- grandparents were Abel & Amanda Stevens and were living in Miami County in about 1860. Their daughters were school teachers there but I don't know what happened to any of them. There were: Martha [Mattie] married a VanDuzen; Katie married a Jones; Ida Josephine married Jacob Rowe, Jr. in Miami County but he died in a couple of years and we don't know anything about him, why he died or where buried. She latter married John Tipton. As far as I know they lived in Miami County around 1860 and I saw in a newspaper that she had visited a Ms. Rowe at Lane.

I am also searching for any of the Weiland family that lived in Miami County also.

Betty Teter, bets@kanza.net

Response: There are no records related to the family you are looking for in Family Histories and Stories of Miami County, Kansas, or either of the two volumes of Cemeteries of Miami County, Kansas. I looked under the name Stevens, Stephens, Stevenson and Stephenson. In Cemeteries of Miami County, Vol. II, p. 207, there is a single lot owned by Frank Weiland in the Lane Cemetery but no marker is on the site to identify anyone who may be buried there.
