RUSHTON, HOTTENSTEIN

I am looking for a death date/burial info on Edward D. Rushton, who died in Labette Twp, Labette Co, KS after March 1895 and before 1899. His spouse at the time of death was Charlotte/Scharlott Rushton. Surviving children were Lovey, Cleveland, and Charles.
Edward is listed as Edwin (this is the only occurrence I can find of this error) on the 1895 Kansas Census done in March 1895. His widow is listed on the 1900 census as Scharlott Hottenstein, who says her marriage took place in 1899, and has the surviving sons (Cleveland & Charles) living in the same household.

WEST, MEADOWS

I am searching for the whereabouts of James and Susan(West) Meadows, who drowned on the Neosho in about 1895. I do not know which county, and will be sending this to all the KS counties through which the Neosho runs. James and Susan were from Appanoose co., IA, he b. 1837, she b. 1844, and they md.1858 in IA. They were gone from Appanoose shortly after marriage, and may have gone straight to KS. James had family in Knox/Warren Co., IL, where the following was found in the local paper: From the Abingdon, Illinois, Argus, 16Jan1896 "Someone hereabout saw in some western paper, an account of the drowning of one James Meadows and wife, during the recent high waters on the Neosho River, Kansas. It is believed by relatives here, that the party was a brother of the late Greenberry Meadows, as he had a brother who owned and lived on a farm along that stream. From what we can learn the couple were on some kind of craft seeking to escape, when the boat became entangled in some drift where the current was swift and in their efforts to extricate themselves from their perilous predicament, the boat was upset precipitating them into the raging river in which they perished............." I am assuming that there would be an estate file, since he owned a farm, so if anyone could perhaps look through the index, or find any other info on this family, I'd be extremely grateful. Thanks in advance! Jeffrey W. Simmons 1255 N. Seminary Galesburg, IL 61401

MCKINZIE

I am looking for my great-grandmother's grave.  She was living near Fairview, Ks in 1885 and I have reason to believe she died before or by 1892.  She was married and widowed 3 times but I believe her name at the time of her death was Elizabeth Young.  She could have been going by Elizabeth McKinzie.  My great-grandfather, James McKinzie, is buried in Fairview cemetery but when checking that out, it doesn't seem like she is buried there.  I have a reference which shows my great aunt, her daughter, is buried in North Edna cemetery, but I can't locate that cemetery.  Could you help me with this?  Thank you.

HUDSON, FORD, ROBINSON

Hello!  My grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother can be found in the 1900 12th Census of the U.S. in Mound Valley Township.  They are listed as follows:  Mary Hudson, born in Ohio in 1831; Mary Ford, daughter, born in Indiana in 1869; and Mary A. Ford, granddaughter, born in Kansas in 1887.  I would like to know more about them.  They were both widows.  I don't know their husbands' name.  My grandmother, Mary Agnes (A) Ford was 12 years old in 1900.  I lost track of her after 1900.  Sometime after 1900 she married and had a boy (my father) and a daughter.  Family rumor has it that she ran away from her 1st husband and married Elmer Alfred Robinson and was listed in 1920 as living at Center, Wilson Cnty., KS.  In the 1930 censes, they are listed as living in Quincy, Greenwood County, KS.  I have a copy of my grandmother's obituary, dd April 21, 1955 and know that she is burried in Greenwood cemetery in Eureka, KS.

I don't know my father's real name.  I don't know my grandfather's name.  I don't know my great-grandfather's name (just Ford).  I don't know my great-great-grandfather's name (just Hudson).  I really would appreciate any help you can give me on tracing these people.

PEARSON, PRICE

I'm looking for information on Charles E. (Everett) Pearson (jr) (1900-?) of Howard, Labette county.  Father of my g-grandmother Ruth Winifred Pearson (1897-1968) .  He was son of Charles E. (Everett, or Ellsworth) Pearson (1862-1934), who ended out his life in Howard, Labette.  I believe he is the son of Jonathan Pearson (1833-?) who finished his life in Labette.  I'm 90% sure that this is the correct lineage, except that Charles Everett is sometimes listed in docs as a Jr., but Ellsworth (charles) is the son of Jonathan, not Everett.  I'm trying to determine whether this is the correct lineage or not.  Any help would be appreciated, especially if someone found the Pearson graveyard in Howard.

WINTERS WINTER

My cousins and I are from the family of William A. Winters. He is in the Labette County History, having built a “nine room house” by 1900. The farm home was located on Tenth Street Road (two miles east of Altamont), five and a half miles south of the Altamont-Oswego highway.

He came from the linage of Christian Winter (no final s), born in 1780, who migrated in 1803 from what is now Germany.

According to family history he came from Hohenlohe but we have not yet established the village or city of origin since the name is assigned to at least three hamlets or towns as well as a geographical area which is discussed in the 11th edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica.

My name is Murl Winters wintersm@evangel.edu.

My cousins who are actively searching for information were born in the Fairview Community two miles north of my own home. They are David Gillespie dgill6602@comcast.net and Kenneth Gillespie KWG@aol.com.

COOK

R. P. Cook is listed as a miller born in Kentucky on the 1885 Labette/Altamont Kansas State Census (p 22).  He is enumerated with J B Blanchard in dwelling # 107.  I am interested to know if this could be Reuben Phillip Cook born about 1850 in Kentucky.  Is there anyone in the area willing to see if this name appears in any other records of the area such as land or court transactions, or if this fellow appears in later census records or death/cemetery records.  Would appreciate any info on this elusive gggrandfather who left Kentucky for "the west". Please contact me if you are able to help with this project!
Thank you for your time.

COOPER, FLUKE, ANDERSON, HAMLIN, BONHAM, REED
I am interested in connecting with anyone who might have an interest in any of the names listed in the short biographical sketch of Susan Anderson COOPER.
Thank you,

Susan Anderson COOPER  (1879 - 1969)

Susan Anderson COOPER was the second daughter born to Gilbert A. COOPER and his wife, Anna V. FLUKE.  Her sister, Verda was born in 1873.

Susan has an interesting family heritage as her father, Gilbert was a Canadian born on a farm at VIRGIL, Ontario, Canada on August 22, 1832 .  VIRGIL is a small town which is located about ten miles from the American border at LEWISTON, New York.  Gilbert came from a very large family and it is quite likely that he and a younger brother, John COOPER became aware of homesteading opportunities in Kansas. As these two brothers looked for new opportunities to own and work land, they headed to the Kansas area to begin to realize their dream. It is not certain how Gilbert met Susan’s mother who was born on September 14, 1843 in Pennsylvania, U.S.A.  It is possible that they met as he left his home in VIRGIL as he might have travelled through Pennsylvania on his way to Kansas.  Or it could be quite possible that one of Anna FLUKE’s parents had connections in Ontario, Canada.

Susan  was born on July 11, 1879 and reared in Labette County and Oswego, Kansas.  Susan's paternal Grandmother was Susan COOPER (nee ANDERSON) so it is very likely that her parents named her after her paternal Grandmother.

During her early childhood, her family moved to Oswego, Kansas where she received her elementary and high school education.  She also attended the Oswego College for Women.

Susan married Anton B. HAMLIN on January 11, 1902 at JOPLIN, Missouri.  In the early years of their married life, they lived with Susan's parents, Gilbert and Anna COOPER .   Then in 1926 they moved to BARTLESVILLE as her husband joined the old Bartlesville Enterprise staff as city editor.

Susan and Anson had five children:  Annabell, born 1903; Dorothy, born 1905; Robert Arthur, born 1908, Raymond, born 1916 and Ruth, born 1918.

After Susan’s husband died on April 16, 1947, she resided in BARTLESVILLE until the time of her death in 1969.  During her lifetime, Susan had been an active member of First Baptist Church.  (As an aside, Susan’s Grandparents: David and Susan COOPER attended Virgil Baptist Church in VIRGIL, Lincoln County, Ontario, Canada and it was on their farm in VIRGIL that her father , Gilbert COOPER was born.) Her son, Raymond G. (Dub) HAMLIN, a graduate of the local high school in BARTLESVILLE, predeceased her in 1964.

Prior to her death on September 8, 1969, Susan had been a patient at the Washington County Memorial Hospital in BARTLESVILLE for the past two months.  She had been in failing health for the past several years.

At the time of her death, she was survived by her daughter, Mrs. Ruth H. BONHAM and Mr. Robert Arthur HAMLIN of Bartlesville, Mrs, Annabelle REED and Mrs. Ned DYE , both of MUSCATINE, Iowa , twelve grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Susan indeed left a rich legacy of children, grand children and great grandchildren from a legacy which spanned over ninety years and two neighbouring countries.
