Topic: Salley, Dexter, Hickock, Hotchkiss, Bushey, Spangler - Jewel County Roots
From: Ernest Salley ej.salley@cox.net
Date: Friday, November 08, 2002 03:10 PM
I am interested in information regarding the Salley, Dexter, Hickock, Hotchkiss, Bushey, Spangler surnames.
My great-grandparents, David Alonzo and Anna Hickock Salley moved to Jewell county about 1873.
My grandfather, Arthur Salley was born in Jewell county in 1874 and he married Belle Dexter in Burr Oak in 1899.
My grandfather had three sisters who lived to adulthood.
Maude(b 1870) who married John C. Bushey
Mae (b1872) who married George Spangler
Etta (b 1876) who married Eber P. Hotchkiss
there were two other Salley children, Ernest Salley (b 1879) and Grace Salley (b1871), who apparently died in childhood.
I am very interested in information regarding any of these individuals and their descendants.

Topic: WWII Airman Sgt. Robert W. Monroe, from Jewell, KS
From: Annette Tison dtison5401@aol.com
Date: Monday, October 21, 2002 07:34 AM
I am trying to locate the relatives of a man who lived in Jewell, Kansas, in 1943, and I need help!
Let me explain. My uncle was a navigator on a B-24 Liberator bomber in World War II. His plane crashed in Germany on April 29, 1944, and all 10 crewmen were killed. Recently, I have found a lot of information about the training my uncle and his crew received, the 8 missions they flew, and their crash. I've also located a photo of the crew taken about 2 weeks before their deaths. I thought relatives of the crew might be interested in this information.
The crew's Radio Operator was Sgt. Robert W. Monroe, whose next of kin, as listed on the Missing Air Crew Report, was his mother, Hazel M. Monroe, General Delivery, Jewell, Kansas.
I would like to locate relatives of Sgt. Monroe so I can tell them about the military service of this fine young man. Any help would be appreciated.

Topic: Fisher family
From: Ray Jackman rjackman@mcn.org
Date: Tuesday, September 10, 2002 10:59 PM
I am seeking information about my grandfather's parents.
My grandfather was Everett Austin Fisher, born in Jewell,
Kansas on Sept. 29,1886. He had 4 brothers, Ernest, Orb,
and Elmer, and they all moved from Kansas to Oregon in the
early 1900's to farm. Everett died on Jan 12, 1970 in
Eugene, OR.
The family story is that the Fisher brothers' father was an
orphan who was found along the trail by settlers (named
Fisher?) who were traveling west in covered wagons. He was
dark and swarthy. We don't even know his name or who he
married, and would like to find out more about him.
I would appreciate any information you can provide.
Thanks, Ray

Topic: Hamlins & Smiths in Jewell Co.
From: Sandra Kay Wood morda02@yahoo.com
Date: Tuesday, September 03, 2002 10:01 AM
Researching Elias & Mary Ann Butler Hamlin; Solomon & Sarah B. Hamlin Smith in Burr Oak, 1890-1901. The Smiths migrated from Nebraska aft. 1871, when their son, my gr-grandfather, was born. Solomon S. & Mary H. are buried in Burr Oak Cemetery. Does anyone know where I can contact the Burr Oak Cemetery association or sexton for burial records, or the address of the court clerk to obtain death records? I have a dear lady there doing lookups for me, but can use all the help I can get.
Thanks!
Sandy

There is a David Fullerton that lives in Mankato, KS. According to the phone book, his number is (785) 378-3759. I do not know Dave's family history, so maybe if you called him, he can give you more information. Best of luck in your research.

I have a Sophronia Jones, daughter of Theodore, son of Henry. They were all born in NY and ended up in Jewell Co.
Sophronia, named for her mother, married John R. Kelley in Ohio, Jewell Co. in 1881. Their only child, Nellie May, was born in 1882, and Sophronia died in 1919 in Formosa, Jewell Co. Her husband John died while on a visit to his sister in Salem, OR.
I'd like to know what became of the daughter Nellie. Did she marry and have children? Does she show up in any of the Jewell co. Records?
Thanks, Carole

Children's names were Margaret, Janet, John, George, Robert and Andrew. By 1880, their parents had died, so I have no record of their names. Any help would be appreciated - I have hit a brick wall.

You may want to interlibrary loan the microfilm of Index to the 1875 State of Kansas Census, from the Kansas State Historical Society. This is an all person index. Using the children's names you will find references to the correct census films to get all the family information. You may also get lucky and be able to pull the parents from the index also, but with a surname like MITCHELL it may be difficult.
home page: www.kshs.org
census main page: http://www.kshs.org/library/censks.htm
Select the link to 1875 for the microfilm numbers. You may also want to take a look at the Society's interlibrary loan policy. Just click on the link at the census page above.
