Topic: Which Cem in Burr Oak- Cortner burials
From: Carol Nickelson-McQueen cnickmc@ponyexpress.net

Will be passing through Jewell Co on Friday, Sept 1. Have received queries from several families looking for burial locations for Harriet/Harriott Nicholson Cortner and husband, Martin Cortner. She died 5 Sept 1909, he died 1900 in Ionia "buried at Bur Oak" In checking the GNIS information on this site, there are six cemeteries listed in the USGS Burr Oak map.

I understand there is a publication of cemetery census information- would someone check this for me in advance of the trip through the state?

Doing a good deed daily,
Thanks for your help!

Hey-- Mankato is my old stomping grounds!!! Try contacting Anna Morgan at the Register of Deeds office in the JW courthouse, Phone # (785) 378-4070. Anna is pretty helpful, and she has assisted me with research all the time.

The Jewell County cemeteries have all been indexed by the North Central Kansas Geneological Society of Cawker City, Kansas.
There are five volumes and all are indexed in a separate index volume. Mankato is in Center Township. There are 3 cemeteries -East Lutheran, Mount Hope and St. Theresa covered in volume 4. Linda

Searching for folks connected to Charles McCarthy, Jr. who ran the McCarthy Hardware store in Mankato, KS at the turn of the 20th century. I know he had at least 3 sons Will, Ed, and Dan. Will and Ed ran the stor after their father's death. They never married according to what I've been told. Dan was a lawyer and at one time was a Kansas State Senator. He married Katherine O'Loughlin one of the first women from Kansas to serve in Congress. She served in FDR's first term. I'm not sure if they had children.

Charles' father was Charles, Sr. Junior was born in Wisconsin. the father lived in a few places but mostly in Kaukauna, WI. Junior's siblings were Timothy, Dennis, Florence, Michael, Dan (in no particular order - except I believe Timothy may have been the youngest.) Michael may have lived in the Mankato area for a while in the 1890's his will was written there and he left it with his brother Charles when he moved back to WI. Michael was killed in a guresome murder in 1905 by Wenzel Kabat in Kaukauna. The trial was in Appleton.

Anyone with any ties to this family please contact me at Flag14@aol.com

HELLO,

I would like to contact someone in Mankato, KS to locate the obituary for Augustus Jerome Wood (died on 21 September 1887 just north of Salem, KS and his home was on the southern line of the Highland Township). One of the local papers at that time probably carried the obituary:

(1)Salem, (2)Burr Oak, (3)Ebson, (4) Mankato, or (5) North Branch.

My e-mail is teaford@ibm.net
