Robert I. SHELBY Sr, 69, Falls Village, Conn., died Thursday, Aug 2, 1990, in a Sharon, Conn. hospital.
Mr SHELBY was a grocer in Holton [KS] and later in California for 35 years before he moved to Connecticut 11 months ago. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was born Aug 24, 1920, at Holton, the son of Robert H. and Chelcia Agnes (FISHER) SHELBY. Mr SHELBY was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hacienda Heights, Calif.
He was married to Betty Jean FRAZEY May 9, 1942, at Holton. She died in October 1987.
Survivors include a daughter, Lynne SHELBY, Falls Village, CT, a son Robert SHELBY Jr, San Diego, CA; a sister, Doris ROUTH, Torrance, CA; two brothers, Paul SHELBY, Topeka, and the Rev. Donald SHELBY, Santa Monica, CA; and three grandchildren.
Services were at 1pm Monday in Mercer Funeral Home. Burial was in Holton Cemetery.
[Robert was the first son of Robert Henry and Hattie Ellen SHELBY- Robert H. was the son of Thomas Beam SHELBY and Ora Belle HANNUM]

Thomas Beam SHELBY, son of John Orr and Nancy Elinor (HOWLAND)SHELBY, was born in Carrollton, Green County, Illinois, December 31, 1866. He died in Manhatten, Kansas, October 3, 1949 at the age of 82.
His parents moved to Kansas in 1870 and settled in the Holton vicinity. He was married to Ora Belle HANNUM of Soldier, Kansas on September 9, 1891. They were parents of six children.
One son, Robert Henry, preceded him in death in 1940. His wife died December 14, 1918. Mr SHELBY pioneered the Cherokee Strip in 1893 near Bison, Oklahoma. He returned to Kansas in 1911 and spent his remaining years in Jackson and Riley Counties. Since 1919, he has lived in and near Manhatten, Kansas.
During the past four years he has lived with his daughter, Mrs Hattie HILL. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Soldier, Kansas since early manhood.
Surviving nearest relatives are five children: Mrs Hattie HILL, Mrs Irene PLUMBERG of Manhatten, Mrs Gladys THOMPSON, of Wasego, Earl SHELBY of Edwardsville, and Jesse SHELBY of Waco, Texas. 18 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

1911 Kansas

Milton Webb was born in Madison Co. Ky., December 20, 1851. There he grew into manhood and on May 24, 1871, he was married to Miss Eliza Sewell of the same county, where they spent the early part of their married life, later moving to illinois for a few years, and then to Kansas, where they spent several years on a farm near Holton.

Thirteen children came to bless this union. They are, John & Jesse Webb, Mrs. T. J. Lindsey and Mrs. Tom Ward, all of Holton, Bub Webb of Whiting, Charlie Webb & Mrs. Eva Pierson of Ohio, Thos. Webb and Mrs. Bertha Conner of Kentucky, Earl Webb of Mapelton Mo., Guy & William Webb who are both at home, and a son Jimmie that died several years ago.

Mr. Webb removed to Kentucky where his wife died April 29, 1901, leaving him with this large family of children. In February of 1902, Mr. Webb married Miss Lucy White of Witts Springs and to them was born one son, Houston Webb, aged 8 years. Two years ago last fall Mr. Webb returned to Kansas and settled near his former home. Last October he moved to the Kickapoo reservation near Whiting. About three years ago he embraced religion and spent the closing years of his life in faithful service for his master, never tiring of speaking words of praise and in trying to lead a better life. Mr. Webb has suffered much the past two years with cancer of the face, and during that time was never known to utter a word of complaint. He bore his suffering with true Christian faith and patience, for he often said, "Its the Lords will that I suffer this, and his will be done not mine, I am ready to go".

February 3, 1911 the summons came and he passed peacefully to rest, after having called his little son to his bed side telling him to "be a good little boy, and be good to Momma", and assuring his family and friends that he loved them all, and appreciated the kindness and help given to him during his long and painful illness. The funeral was held in the M.E. Church in Netawaka, February 4, at 1:30 pm conducted by the pastor, Rev.Landin, who preached a very appropriate sermon from the text, "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want". The six sons acted as pall bearers and the remains were laid to rest in the Netawaka cemetery.

Robert Alexander Plumb Obit

Plumb.

Robert Alexander Plumb was born in Lawrence County, Missouri, Mary 29, 1846, and died at his home near Circleville, Kan., April 24, 1919, aged 73 years, 10 months and 25 days.

He grew to manhood in Missouri and in the spring of the trying days of 1863, he sought a new home on the free plains of Kansas, locating at Circleville. He afterwards moved to Holton and lived here for ten years.

He was married to Nancy L. McCans on Jan. 19, 1868. To this union were born six children, Charles N., who died in infancy; Max E., who dies at 7 years of age; C. Clinton, of near Circleville; Fred E., who dies at the age of 24; Margaret Abilene, now of Horton, and Robert A., still at the home farm. their mother dies June 6, 1889.

On Sept. 22, 1891, he was married to Anna Irby. To this union were born two children, both dying in infancy. On Feb. 8, 1911, she preceded him to the other world, leaving a host of friends earned by a beautiful Christian life of service.

On Nov. 26, 1912, he married Hattie Grier, of Seneca, Kan.

When a boy he united with the Methodist chruch and remained in close relation all his life, filling with credit every duty assigned him.

In 1881 he bought and located on the farm one-half mile west of the Pea Ridge church, and his life and family have been useful and active in all social and church affairs. Race prejudice was never know in his case, as the real man within overshadowed the outward appearance. He leaves three children and eight grandchildren to call him blessed. His funeral was conducted by his former pastor, M.G. Hamm, assisted by his present pastor, Rev. Franks, of Circleville. The many beautiful floral tributes faintly hinted as the love and esteem in which he was held. He was laid to rest in the Holton cemetery and will long be remmebered as one of the best citizens and neighbors of the community in which he lived. Deep sympathy and real sorrow are expressed at his loss.

Isaac Magers

Obituary for Isaac Magers:
Isaac Magers was born at Des Moines, Iowa on May 5, 1852, and died at Holton, Kansas, Oct. 31, 1944 being 92 years, 5 months and 26 days old.
He grew to manhood at Marshalltown, Iowa, and came to Kansas in about 1873, when 21 years old. He took a homestead at McPherson, Kan. In these pioneer days he spent much time driving cattle over the old Chisholm trail to Iowa. He loved cattle and outdoor life and followed farming as a business.
He moved from McPherson, Kan., to Hebron, Nebr., In 1893 he was married to Lucina Daugherty, later they moved to Plato, Mo., and returned in fourteen years to Jackson County, Kan. The rest of his life was spent on the Indian reservation, southwest of Holton, until failing health compelled him to retire to town six years ago.
Besides the wife he leaves ten children: Edna Aikens, Washington state, Vernie Stringlas, Hutchinson, Kan.; Ella Roberts, Topeka, Kans.; Charles H. Magers, Payette, Idaho; Thomas Magers, Topeka, Kan.; Albert Magers, Wilsonville, Neb.; Francis Magers, (U.S. Navy) Alaska; Jessie Marshall, Emmett, Kan.; Roy Magers, Mayetta, Kan.; Dora Stringlas, Hutchinson, Kan. There are also forty grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
A son, Clarence, died in Oregon in 1924 and Carl of Holton in 1924.
The burial service was conducted from the Gabel-McAsey Mortuary on Nov. 5, 1944 by Rev. W.R. Reeves, of the First Baptist church. Miss Christina Stoll and Rose Jacobs sang accompanied by Mrs. Mercer. The pall bearers were Cecil Bowser, Ora Bowser, Geo. Taylor, Warner Coffin, Joe McClintock and Chas. Morrisey.
Burial was in the Holton cemetery.

Mrs. Margaret Daugherty

Obituary for Mrs. Margaret Daugherty:
Mrs. Margaret Daugherty of Holton was born in Illinois, April 18, 1841 and died at the home of her son and daughter, John and Mary M. Daugherty near Holton, April 16, 1911, age 70 years.
Mrs. Margaret Daugherty became a member of the Christian Church at the age of 17, in Missouri. She was united in marriage to Mr. Alkade Martin in 1853. To this union, two sons were born, John and Joseph. John was called to the celestial home at the age of 18 months, Joseph lives in Wallace County, Kansas.
Mr. Alkade Martin served in the war, dying while there of typhoid fever. After Mr. Martin's death, she lived a widow for several years, and then was united in marriage to Dawson G. Daugherty. To this union, ten children were born: 5 boys and 5 girls. Miss Mary M. Daugherty, Mrs. Sinda A. Magers, John Daugherty, Orrin Daugherty, James S. Daugherty, Dawson S. Daugherty, who live near Holton. Mr. Reuben Daugherty of Wallace, Kans.; Mrs. Maggie Davis of Colorado Springs, CO., Mrs. Anna Nelson of Randolph, Kans., and Mrs. Rhoda J. Trosper of Morland, Kansas.
Her husband, Dawson G. Daugherty died Dec. 26, 1896, since which time she has lived with her children until she was called to her heavenly home, the golden cord is broken, the silken strings loosened, the smiling welcoming angels have opened wide the pearly gates and called Mrs. Daugherty to her celestial home. Silently, she sleeps at Holton. But while she's gone, her influence will be lasting in the community in which she has lived. Her memory will live in the minds of her friends and her loss will be mourned as few have ever been.
The funeral took place at the Holton Cemetery, where she was laid by her husband's side. She leaves 11 children to mourn her loss and a host of friends.
Oh Father in thy wisdom, soothe the heart stricken relatives and friends and visit the home in thy kindness, made desolate and sorrowful by her death. Teach thm to follow the sweet lesson, exemplified by the noble Christian life of this womanly woman and when earth's pilgrimage is over, reunite this loving family circle so ruthlessly broken by a mother's death.

Donald Russell Rhoda

SERVICES TODAY FOR DON RHODA

Funeral services for the late Donald Russell Rhoda were held this afternoon at the Community Methodist church with Rev. George Sanders officiating . Burial was in the local cemetery, with the Shelby Masonic Lodge conducting graveside services.

Don, who has been in poor health for the past two years, passed away at his home Monday evening following a sudden heart attack. He was born in Soldier, Jackson Co., Kansas January 5, 1900, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rhoda, who preceded him in death. His father passed away July 15, 1947 and his mother followed six months later, February 15, 1948.

He attended schools in Kansas and graduated from high school in O'Dell, Nebraska. A veteran of World War I, he entered the service in 1917. Prior to his arrival in Montana in 1923, he taught school in Kansas.

He and Irma Gunter were married at the Community Methodist Church in Shelby, Sep 2, 1923. They spent several years at various places in Wyoming, returning to Shelby in 1945. On August 1, 1945 they established the Rhoda
Floral Co., which they have operated since.

The deceased was a member of Castle Rock Lodge No. 45 A.F. and A.M. of Midwest, WY., a Shriner and Royal Arch Mason as well as a member ofB.P.O.E.

Recently at Bozeman, he was appointed District Representative for unit 11 of the Floral Telegraph Delivery and was to have taken office August1.

Surving are his wife, Irma, a son, Donald Robert, and two grandchildren, Donna Roberta, age 8 and Brusan, age 2, all of Shelby.

SERVICES FOR MRS. NEL RHODA THURSDAY AT 3

Another of Shelby's pioneer residents passed on about 2 a.m. Sunday morning when Mrs. Nel Rhoda, wife of the late Frank Rhoda, died in the St. Mary's Hospital in Conrad.

Funeral sevices are scheduled for Thursday afternoon at the Community Methodist church and interment will be beside her husband in the local cemetery. Mr. Rhoda passed away on July 15, 1947, just seven months prior to the death of Mrs. Rhoda.

Mrs. Rhoda was born February 15, 1877 in Holton, Jackson County, Kansas and was 71 years of age at the time of her death. She was united in marriage to Frank Rhoda on March 9, 1898. They lived at Lincoln, Nebraska for a number of years, then moved to Thermopolis WY before coming to Shelby.

The family moved to Shelby in 1923 during the start of the oil boom and have made their home here since that time.

Mrs. Rhoda who had been in failing health for a number of years worked incessantly at the green house on the north side.

About 10 days ago she became ill and her case was diagnosed as uremic poisoning Wednesday and she was taken to the Conrad hospital and failed to overcome the effects of the rapidly spreading poison.

Survivors include their only son, Don; one grandson, Don Jr., and one great grandchild, Donna Roberta, besides a host of friends and neighbors.

Mary Edna Nuzman Olds

Mary Edna Nuzman was born at Soldier, Jackson Co. Kans., Nov., 20th 1879 and died June 2, 1906, aged 27 years, 6 months and twelve days. She was the oldest daughter of Lewis Nuzman, and sister of Arthur Nuzman; her mother died when she was a child. In her girlhood days she united with the M. E. church of which she was still a member. In May, 1903, she was married to John E. Olds who with one little daughter (Merle Olds Anders) is left to mourn her loss. Her sickness was short, only one week, and her death came as a great shock to her family and friends. The funeral services were held Saturday ;evening at 5 o'clock from the M. E. church, Rev. Rousey conducting the services. The pall bearers were six young ladies dressed in white with black hats and gloves. The casket was covered with flowers and
all that was mortal was followed by an unusually large number of relatives and friends to whom Edna was held in high esteem. Hers was one of those kindly dispositions that always keep their friends. For the bereaved ones sympathy is expressed by all.

James SHELBY, living four miles Southwest of this city, and who has been very ill for some months past, died Tuesday evening and was buried yesterday. Several of Mr SHELBYs friends from this neighborhood attended the funeral.

[My note- This was Thomas and Nancy SHELBYs son James E-He died Tuesday, 15 Aug 1876- Surprised his Mother & brother, John Orr, are not mentioned- She & John and his family were living in the HH of a J.S. DALLAS, on the 1875 State census for Jackson County, Kansas]

Nancy SHELBY was born in Pennsylvania, May 25, 1805 and died at her son's, five miles Northwest of Holton, August 8, 1886. She, in company with her parents when quite young, moved to Brown County, Ohio, and was married to Thomas SHELBY, February 28, 1833. She and her husband both
united with the M.E. Church in that place and remained constant members. They moved with their family in 1865, to Greene Co, Illinois, and thence to Jackson County, Kansas in 1870. Her husband died in 1873 and her son in 1876. Mother SHELBY was a great sufferer. Her funeral was preached at the Carmel School-house, Sunday, August 22, 1886. A large company of friends were present. Her remains rest in the cemetery on the parallel in this county.

[My note- This was Nancy GILLISPIE, she died at the home of her son John Orr SHELBY. Her husband Thomas was born in 1796 in PA and died 6 December, 1873 and is buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Netawaka Twp, Jackson Co, KS- Do not know if this is the same cemetery as Nancy's, nor do I know if an obituary would be available for Thomas.]

Obituary

Ada Clare Baber was born near Clifton, Kansas, October 25, 1883. Her earlylife was spent in north central Kansas, where her father was pastor of variouscharges in the United Brerthern Church. On September 13, 1913, she wasmarried to Saren Christian Sarensen of Netawaka, where she lived for nearly50 years, until because of failing health , she moved to the White Way RestHome at Wetmore, Kansas. There she passed away on July 2, 1963. Mr. Sarensen had preceded her in death on February 26, 1941.

She is survived by all four of her children: two sons, Noel A. Sarensen of Netawaka, and Stuart C. Sarensen on Wichita; and two daughters, Mrs. Jack (Shirley) Carson of Mission, and Mrs F. W. (Ruth) Shull of Glasco. Also
surviving are two brothers, Ernest M. Baber of Denver, Colorado, and CarrollP. Baber of Topeka, one sister, Mrs. Lee Fletcher of Boston, Massachusetts; and 12 grandchildren. Two brothers, Ray E. and Harold E. Baber preceded her
in death.

Before her marriage, Mrs. Sarensen was a teacher, and taught in the Netawaka Public Schools. She was a member of the Netawaka Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Women's Society of Christian Service. She also belonged to the Home Circle Club and to the Netawaka Women's Republican Club.

Mrs. Sarensen's chief interest lay in her home and family. As long as her health permitted, she enjoyed visiting in the homes of her children and sharing their family life. She was a true mother in the finest sense of the word.

Funeral services were conducted July 5 by the Reverend Duane Parker of the Methodist Church in Netawaka, with interment in the Netawaka Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Alan Artwater, Charles Artwater, Albert Gerhardt, Andrew Dieckman, T.J. Christensen and Charley Beam.

Organ music was furnished by Erma Beam. Flowers were cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Bert Hallauer, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Christensen, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Spiker, Mrs. Albert Abel, Mrs. Alan Artwater and Mrs. Clarence Jones.

Lucina Amy Magers died at the home of her daughter, Ella Roberts in Centralia, Kansas, on Thursday, Jan. 29, at the age of 78 years, 2 mo's and 7 days.
Lucina Magers was the second of ten children born to Dawson and Margaret Daugherty of Holton, Kansas.
On Oct. 12, 1894 she was united in marriage to Isaac Magers at Hebron, Nebr. To this union was born 12 children, eleven of whom are living; six daughters, Verna and Dora Stringos of Hutchinson, Kans.; Jesse Marshall, Emmett, Kans.; Ella Roberts, Centralia, Kansas; Irene McClintock, Holton, Kansas; Edna Aikens, Kent, Wash.; and 5 sons, Roy Magers of Mayetta, Kans.; Tom of Topeka, Kans.; Henry of Payette, Idaho; Francis of Moses Lake, Wash.; and Albert of Montana.
Mrs. Magers was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 31, 1944 and by her son Carl on June 25, 1939. Besides immediate members of her family one sister, Mrs. Margaret Davis of Solomon, Kansas, 48
grandchildren, and 28 great grandchildren.
The funeral was held at the McAsey Mortuary on Sunday, Feb. 1, at 2 o'clock. Rev. Henderson of Hutchinson Kans. had charge of the services. Burial was in the Holton Cemetery beside her husband and son.
Active pall bearers were grandsons, Larry Marshall of Emmett, Edward Magers of Topeka, and Keith Magers of Junction City, and nephews, Dawson and Galen McClain of Holton, and Gary Wilson of Holton.

Dawson Daugherty was born in Sullivan County, Illinois in 1864 and died at Stormont Hospital in Topeka, Kansas, Nov. 26, 1924, age 60 years, 3 months, and 16 days.
Mr. Daugherty came to Jackson County in 1896 and located on the reservation where he met and later married Miss Ora Levengood. To this union was born 2 children, Mrs. Helen Niles and Mrs. Margaret Mc Lane, both of Mayetta, Kansas.
Besides his children, he leaves to mourn his loss, 4 grandchildren, Paul and Pauline Niles, and Galin and Dawson McLane; three sisters and 4 brothers, Mrs. Rhoda Trosper of Morland, Kans., Mrs. Margaret Davis of Solomon, Kans., Mrs. Lucina Magers of Mayetta, Kans.; The brothers are, Oran, James and Ruban Daugherty of Holton, and one half-brother, Joseph Martin of Shannon Springs, Kans. and a host of friends.
