Topic: Rogers, Thomas, Templer, McLean
From: Charlie Templer chartemp@aol.com
Date: Monday, April 24, 2000 08:00 AM

Several of us are researching a new-found connection to the family of Samuel Oliver Rogers and Sarah Jane Miller of the Elk County area. They are found in the 1870 US Census in Howard County in the Elk Falls township. We know very little about Samuel and Sarah Rogers other than the information available from their gravestones in Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard, KS.

Their family consists of Elmyra Belle Rogers, m. to Stuart Hawthorne McLean; Ida May Rogers, m. to John McLean (brother of Stuart McLean); Emma J. Rogers, m. (1) to a ? Shelby, (2) to Charles ? Schofield; James Oliver Rogers, m. to Flora May Thomas, daughter of William G. Thomas and Isabel Chadwick; and Howard Henry Rogers, m. to Viola Rose Templer, daughter of George W. Templer and Eliza Jane Chadwick.

We have learned a little about the family of Elmyra Rogers McLean, know very little about the family of Ida Rogers McLean, even less about the family of Emma Rogers Shelby Schofield, and have quite a bit on the family of James Oliver Rogers and Howard Henry Rogers.

We would like to talk to any family members who might know more of this family so that we may better understand our family relationships in the Elk and Greenwood county areas.

Contact me at chartemp@aol.com and we thank you for your time.

Diana,

I can give you a little information. My husband has relatives in the Busby cemetery so we go there around once a year. It is a small country cemetery north of Longton. There is a very old school house nearby. There was once a town named Busby there, and that is where the cemetery got its name. My husband and his sister both say there are no Busbys buried there. I agree. I did look at all the stones a couple of times and I think I would have noticed a Busby because that is a name connected to my husband's family. His aunt (Alice Zollars) married Ben Busby. They had several children including a Robert, and an Earl. I don't have all the children's names here with me. My sister-in-law has the best recollections of family information, and she contacted Robert to see what he could tell us as well before I replied to your post. Uncle Ben was secretive about his family background. We know that he had a brother named John who had been in prison. We're not sure why. But Robert remembered one attempt by some of his family members to learn something more about the Busby family background. He said they went to the courthouse in Sedan Kansas (I belive that would be in Chautauqua county) and found some records. He also said that they went looking for the grave of Uncle Ben's father in some small country cemetery south of Sedan.

Sorry that's all I could give you at this time. Next time we go to Busby cemetery, I will take a look for the Busby name again, but I'm fairly certain I won't find it.

Good Luck!
Ruth Zollars

Topic: HANNEGAN of Painterhood Township
From: ????
Date: Saturday, March 18, 2000 08:12 PM

I am looking for information of my Great Grandfather, Daniel William HANNEGAN who had a homestead in the Painterhood Township. Daniel died of pneumonia after a wild ride in a driving rain storm during the dispute of Howard County. He was buried in his home region, but the family have not been able to find his grave site. It is presumed to be an unmarked grave. Any assistance in locating his burial spot would be greatly appreciated. Most likely spot to look for it would be the Busby cemetery since it would be the closest to his homestead. His widow Margaret Ann WYLEY Hannegan lost possession of the homestead after his death due to debts incurred. Although it is believed that she did sell a portion of the homestead prior to forfeiture. What would be the best way of locating information of Daniel Hannegan's death? He died sometime in 1884 when my grandfather was 14. Any information welcome.

Topic: Swisher, Asylums or Sanitoriums in 1890's?
From: Linda Swisher Allen LRSAllen@home.com
Date: Thursday, March 16, 2000 10:23 PM

I'm trying to find out what happened to my ancestor, Jacob Swisher in Elk
Co. KS in the 1890's. He and his sons and their families moved to the
Grenola area of Elk Co in ~1883 from Vermilion Co., IL. He and his wife,
Mary, received a land deed in 1883. Later sold some to his eldest son. In
the 1895 state census, he is listed as the head of the household. But in
1893 his wife, Mary, buys land in Grenola in her name only and in the 1895
census, he is not listed with her in Grenola or with any of the children.
Son Thomas is now head of the household on the farm. According to the
tombstone reading, he died April 16, 1900, and is buried in the Greenlawn
Cemetery in Grenola. He was 73 years old at the time of his death. So my
question is was there any insane asylums or TB sanitoriums or other health
sanitoriums in this region of Kansas around this time, 1890's? Trying to
find out if he was ill or something during this time. Does anyone else have
some ideas?

I am trying to confirm that Mary Isabel Piner and/or her husband Rufus Johnson are buried in a small cemetery at or near Grenola, Elk County, Kansas. Any help in that regard will be very much appreciated. I was hoping that someone on this county list had a cemetery publication for Grenola where they could look up the two people in question. Thanks!!

Do not know that I have any help for you, but I have one page for the Grenola Cemetery. I am researching Pinegar and Piner is listed below the Pinegars. There is a Dola L., Ed. C. and Gay. The whole book is at the Grenola Historical Society which is located in their Museum and ran by Shirley Sweet.

Good luck

Mary Isabelle is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery in Grenola. Rufus died in Ft. Smith AR and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery (Not sure if that is in Ft. Smith or Madison County where they used to live.)

How are you related? She is my Great-great grandmother. Her first husband John Ball was my line.
