W. H. Jelf Died Friday
Morning at
His Home Near Town.
The funeral of W. H. Jelf, who died at his home north-east of Sedan Friday, Jan. 23rd, of pneumonia, was held at the Christian church Sunday morning at 10 o’clock. Rev. J. I. Smallwood in charge and aided by the W. R. C. and J. A. Ferrell, who paid an eloquent tribute to the deceased. The G. A. R. of which Mr. Jelf was an honored member, held their impressive ritualistic service at the grave in Greenwood cemetery.
Mr. Jelf was an honored member of this community, having been resident in Chautauqua county, since 1871. He was a faithful friend and neighbor, a good husband and father.
W. H. Jelf was born near Belleville, Ind., March 30, 1842. He enlisted in Co. H, 11th Indiana Infantry, April 21, 1861 and served for four years in the Civil war. Dec. 8, 1861 he enlisted in Co. C, 51st Indiana and for two months of the time until he was mustered out Dec. 13th, 1865, was confined in Libby prison.
Mr. Jelf was married in 1866 to Miss Mary L. Ruggles, who with a daughter and three sons, survive him. All were present at the funeral. These are Mrs. Isora Shimer of Wichita, Dwight of Nowata and Clancy and W. D. Jelf of this city. The relatives have the sincere sympathy of their many friends.
