A County Pioneer Passed Away at Bolton Last Night

            Nathan M. Farlow, of Bolton, died at the family home there last night at 11:50 o’clock, after an illness of several months.  Mr. Farlow was aged 78 years, 2 months and 21 days.  He was a pioneer of this county coming here some time about 1869 and locating on a farm near the town of Bolton.  On November 11, 1902, he moved to Bolton and engaged in the mercantile business, and had been continually in business there until his death.

            Mr. Farlow was always active in all public movements for the betterment of all communities and was one of the most influential citizens of this county.  He served as trustee of the High School for several years, was a member of the G. A. R. and also the A. H. T. A.

            Mr. Farlow enlisted January 4, 1864, in Co. F, 13th Indiana volunteer cavalry, under Col. G. M. J. Johnson.  The regiment was assigned to the Army of the Cumberland and saw service in the states of Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi and Kentucky.  He was with Gen. Grierson and participated in some sharp bouts with the enemy in its own country, prior to its final order to rendezvous at Vicksburg, Mississippi, where its muster out occurred Nov. 18, 1865, by special order No. 76.

            He was married February 4, 1868 to Martha Cloud, a daughter of Daniel and Mary A. (Millilken) Cloud.

            He is survived by his wife and four children, Elmer, Harry, Mrs. D. W. Finney and William C. Farlow.  All the children still reside in this county and in or near Bolton.

            The funeral service will be held at the family home in Bolton, Monday morning and the burial will be at the Bolton cemetery.

Death of N. M. Farlow

 

            The illness of Mr. Nathan M. Farlow of Bolton, frequently noticed, closed in death March 26th, at his home, at the age of 78 years, 2 months and 21 days.  He is survived by his wife, Mary A. Cloud, to whom he was married fifty-one years ago last February 4th, also sons Elmer, Harry and W. C. and a daughter, Mrs. Mary A. Finney; also eight grandchildren; also a half-brother, Lindley M. of Russiaville, Ind., and sisters, Ellen Trimble and Cena Farlow of Paola, Ind.

            Mr. Farlow came to near Bolton in 1887 with his family, locating on a farm and in 1902 moved to Bolton, engaging in merchandising.  He enlisted Jan. 4, 1864 in Co. F., 131st Indiana, and later in the 13th Cavalry from which he was discharged Nov. 30, 1865.

            Mr. Farlow was a life long member of the Friends church and often served as one of its officers, and always interested in Sunday school and a Bible class teacher until failing health prevented.  He was always interested in schools and for a dozen years was one of the loyal trustees of the county high school, and often served his township as an officer and citizen with credit.  The funeral was held in the Bolton Friends church, and Revs. Daniel S. and Sadie M. Pickett spoke of his Christian character, and virtues, and then the friends laid him to rest with the pioneers of that vicinity in the Harrisonville cemetery.
