Funeral Services From His Late
Home, 17 North Forest Avenue, at
4 Tomorrow Afternoon—He
Had Held Public Offices.

Lemuel Hargrave Johnson, 78 years old and a pioneer Chanute business man, died yeaterday evening at his home, 17 North Forest avenue at 8:45 o’clock. The body will lie in state at the home tomorrow afternoon from 3 until 4 o’clock in order that the friends who desire may view the remains. The funeral services, which will be conducted by D. E. Hoover, of Baldwin, Kas., will be from the home at 4 o’clock. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Mr. Johnson had been failing in health for several years and for a week there had been no hope of his recovery. Apoplexy was the cause of his death.
“Squire” Johnson, as he was called by his acquaintances, was born in Indiana, October 9, 1835. When a small boy he moved with his parents to Plymouth, Ill. During the civil war he served the union as a member of the One Hundred and Forty-eighth regiment of Illinois volunteer infantry.
July 7, 1869, he was married to Annie Wood and in the fall of 1874 they moved to Chanute. Here Mr. Johnson engaged in the general merchandise business in the firm name of Johnson & Warner. From 1866 until 1910, when he retired from active business because of ill health, he conducted a real estate and insurance business.
He had served in various capacities as a public officer, having been justice of the peace, county commissioner and a member of the city council. He was a member of the Chanute G. A. R. post and of the Workmen and the Select Knights lodges. He became a church member in early manhood.
Mr. Johnson is survived by a widow and six children. The children are B. W. Johnson of Caney, Kas., W. H. Johnson of Kansas City, Kas., Mrs. William Burge of Shaw, Mrs. A. F. Wiley of Humboldt and Misses Pearl and Bessie Johnson of this city.
