OBITUARY: GLENN LEON "BEAR" GARTEN

Glenn Leon "Bear" Garten, the son of Guy William Garten and Marian (Trotter) Garten, was born September 8, 1944, in Sun City, Kansas. After high school, he married Mary Connor on May 14, 1965, in Pratt, Kansas. Bear served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. While in Vietnam, he served with the 168th Engineer Combat Battalion 557 LE attached. He served in Operation Junction City in 1967. Bear went from Private First Class to an E5 during his tour in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

After returning from the service, Bear worked as a heavy equipment operator in commercial construction and in the oil fields. He continued this work until complications from his war service caused him to retire.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Dale. Survivors include: wife, Mary of the home; son: Terry of Chickasha; daughter and husband: Glenna and Rick Dennis of Uion City; sisters Bonnie Shaffer of Aurora, Colorado, and Vera Wood of Citrus Heights, California; brothers: James of Amarillo, Texas and Bobby Lee of Wichita. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Guy, Amy, Glenn and, Timothy Garten; Christopher, Tiffany and Emily Dennis; and one great grandchild, Colton Dennis.
