Obituary of MARY ANSTRESS BARNARD SHATTUCK

Mrs. Mary A. Shattuck was born October 16, 1844, in St. Charles County, Missouri. She died at her home in Pleasanton, Kansas, January 10, 1933, age eight-eight years and three months. She was married to William H. Shattuck, October 8, 1865. Nine children were born to this union. Mrs. Shattuck was one of the early settlers, coming to Linn County in 1860, and living there continuously until her death. This story of her early life and travels was written down for her in her later years by her daughter, Jessie Frisbie.

The nine Shattuck children and their sons and daughters are listed below.

Grant M. Shattuck, who spent most of his adult life in Lead, South Dakota. He married Stella Dennis. They had no children.

Oscar Shattuck, who married Ida McCauley. Their children were Rees, Faye Smith, Verner, Grant and Fern Middaugh.

Alden Shattuck who passed away at Pleasanton, Kansas. He was never married.

Jessie Frisbie who married James P. Frisbie. They had four sons: Glen, James Wilbur, Arthur and Howard.

Nettie Calvin who married Elmer Calvin. Children of this family were Homer, Clifton, Lee. Christine Leasher, and Freda Shannon.

Nora Calvin who married Lonnie Calvin. Their children were Opal Sadler, Dorothy Bird, and Wilmer.

Clyde Shattuck who married Lena Laws and had two children. They were Edna Reinke and William.

Josie Shattuck who died in 1880 at an early age.

Ina Calvin who married Dillard Calvin. Children of this family were Muriel Volkay, Mildren Coffin, Dale and Marjorie.

In November 1963, all the grandchildren listed above are living except Homer Calvin. One daughter, Mrs. Ina Calvin, lives at Pleasanton, Kansas.

(NOTE: This is the obituary of my great-grandfather and great-grandmother, William Henry Shattuck and Mary Anstress Barnard Shattuck. Mary Shattuck's story of her trips to the west coast and back to the midwest are already in the Family Stories.)
