Obituary of ALBERT H. SMITH

Honorable A.H. Smith, a resident of Valley township of this county, died at his residence suddenly on Sunday, September 23, 1866, aged about 39 years. Mr. Smith was one of the true men of the County and State, and one whose place cannot in this crisis of public affairs be readily filled.

The deceased was a man of unexceptionable character, both as a public man and a private citizen. His conduct in every position was marked with a degree of candor and honesty, seldom found in any one, and this candor and honesty tempered and adorned with modesty, and united with habits of mature reflection before expression, justly secured for him an enviable reputation, and universal regard.

During the war he stood all of the time inflexibly in favor of the Union and Freedom, and was one of the firm and true men of the county. In 1863, Mr. Smith was elected a member of the Board of Commissioners, in which position he served the county faithfully and ably. In 1864 he was elected a member of the State Senate, for this county, in which position he faithfully represented his constituency with that purity of motive and firmness of purpose which was so eminently characteristic of the man. By Mr. Smith's death, Linn county loses one from among her best men; the State one of it's purest Senators; and the cause of freedom one of its firmest supports. Mr. Smith came to this county in 1858, and settled on a farm in the beautiful Valley of the Maris de Cygne, where he continued to reside until his death. Living close upon the border of Missouri during the terrible years, immediately preceding and during the war, without flinching; and with his neighbors, holding that part of our county from the grasp of Border Ruffians and Traitors. May his character be emulated by all who would hold public places, as his memory will be held dear by all who love pure and just characters.
