Obituary of CHRISTIAN D. "JIM" ROPER
Christian D. "Jim" Roper, 83, formerly of Halsted and Kaufman, Texas, died Friday (June 23, 2000) at Friendly Acres Retirement Community in Newton.

He was born Aug. 13, 1916 in Halsted to Christian and Eula Dell (Hunt) Roper.

He was winner of the first NASCAR (National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing) stock car race held in 1949. He was a race car driver and horse breeder and trainer.  He married Ruth Haury in 1940 in Gravette, Ark. She died Feb. 11, 1944.

He was a member of NASCAR, the International Motor Contest Association and the National Thoroughbred Breeders Association.

Along with his wife, he was preceded in death by two infant sons in 1944 and 1955 and a brother, Bob Roper in 1999.

Survivors include: three nephews, Jeff Roper of Salina, Donald Haury Jr. of Halsted and Ricky Haury of Wamego; and three nieces, Ruth Alexander, Monica Flask and Kris Mueller, all of Halsted.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Halsted Cemetery with Bill Mills officiating.

Memorials have been established with High Banks Hall of Fame in care of Kaufman Funeral Home.
