Topic: Jacob B. Kellar
From: Vicky Linke vlinke@bcremc.net
Date: Tuesday, November 13, 2001 11:06 AM

In October of 1870 Jacob B. Kellar brought land in the South East quarter of Section number 30 in township number 34 south of
Range number 20 East containing 160 acres.
It was recorded at Humboldt. Can anyone tell me where this is and if Jacob B. Kellar shows on the 1870 census for Allen County. He was in Labette Co., Kansas before buying this property.

Vicki

Section 30 of Township 34S, Range 20E is in Labette County,Kansas, not Allen County. You will find it about 3 miles west of Bartlett, KS on US 166, on the north side of the road. To the best of my knowledge, you can only record the purchase of land in the county where is land is located Thus, you could not record the purchase of Labette County land in Allen County.

You will find Section 30 of Township 24S, Range 20E in Allen County. It is about 2.5 miles east of La Harpe, KS on the north side of US 54. You might want to verify your sources as to which Township the land was located in, 24S or 34S.

If your library has a copy of "Township Atlas of the United States" by John L Androit, on page 212 is a map of Kansas showing the location of all the Township,Ranges, and counties. The map does not show the sections.

There is no listing for a Jacob B Kellar in the index for the 1870 Federal Census. The index contains the following:

Kellar:
Alna A Butler Co. 898 Walnut Twp
Charles Ellis Co. 028 Elsworth Twp
Reuben Franklin Co. 153 4 W. Ottowa

In the 1860 index for the Federal Census, I found:

Kellar:
George P Leavenworth Co. 133 Leavenworth
Julisu Leavenworth Co. 120 Leavenworth

These two are likely in the City of Leavenworth rather than a township.

You may also want to check the all person indexes to the 1865 and 1875 State of Kansas Censuses. The indexes will reference you to the actual census information. You can interlibrary loan the indexes from the Kansas State Historical Society. Take a look at the following link:

http://www.kshs.org/library/censks.htm

If you have any questions, let me know.

Good luck

Chuck

The following ELDREDGE are buried in the Harmony Cemetery in Savonburg, Allen County, Kansas:

Eldredge J.E. May 15, 1836 - Dec 21, 1900 Co. F Iowa Vol. Inf

Augusta M 1841 - 1919
Chas Fredrick 1871 - 1950

These entries were found on page 53 of "Cemeteries of Allen County, Kansas (except Highland & Mt. Hope)"

Compiled by Lucile Winter and Frances Hill
East Central Kansas Genealogical Society
P O Box 78
Iola, KS 66749

I only searched the cemeteries near Savonburg, as each cemetery in the book has its own index.

The Kansas State Historical Society has microfilms of the "Savonburg Record" available for ILL. The paper was published from Nov. 1891 to July 1922.

This link will take you to the newspaper search page at the KSHS web site. Leave the City box blank, select Allen County, put in the years of interest and put "Savonburg" in the Words in Title box. The results page will give you the microfilm reel numbers. Your librarian will need this and the newspaper title to order the films for you. You should also check out the link to "Interlibrary Loan Policies". You will find this link on the search page.

Hope this helps, and if you have any questions, let me know.
